Just that. It's my pet hate and I can take no more.

Indeed. Totally reasonable assertion.

I heard this today. It makes people sound less intelligent imo.

Report
WorraLiberty · 12/02/2018 18:16

Yes very unreasonable.

Apart from the fact tons of people keep posting to say this, I think these threads can put people with less than perfect spelling/grammar off of posting about their problems.

As long as others can understand them, people should be free to post as they please without feeling judged for it.

I get that it's annoying but we're all adults here and I'm sure it's better to grit your teeth, than make people feel embarrassed about how they word things.

Fine for correcting in school but it doesn't have a place on a mainstream chatboard though. See Worra's post ^^ for explanation of why if lacking imagination.

It's no longer good enough to say we all have to be super-tolerant of this. It's a dreadful mistake and our children are living in a world where they will be severely marked down in exams if they make it. Therefore as parents, grandparents, or whoever, we all really do have a duty to learn to get it right.

We have a being / been affliction where I live:

"I bought her treat for been good"
"They are been naughty today"
"I'm not been funny, but..."

It seems to be very localised, I've lived in the general area all my adult life but didn't notice it until I moved to this town... I do wonder if they all had the same English teacher!

I do remember SPaG being of a much better standard when 'twas all fields around here, but people are allowed to be lax on a chat forum.

Some don't know it's wrong. Most don't care, and they're not obliged to.

I don’t understand why people feel the need to correct other adults. Smacks of smugness and superiority.

Your own children, fine. People you’re paid to teach, also fine. Strangers posting on a forum - not fine.

Well run some classes on Pedant's Corner then Gnother or turn your living room into a classroom if you like, but it's not yours or anyone else's job to do that on AIBU.

Are you a goady fucker then, Lost? I mean, this isn't the board for it and presumably you know that so, knowing that you'll make some posters feel badly and inadequate because you're pulling them up - unasked - on their spelling, grammar, etc., do you get your kicks from that?

Report
BIWI · 12/02/2018 18:30

If the OP was correcting someone specifically then that would be twattish. But she isn't. It's pointing out as a general thing.

I’m twitching, just reading this. 😣 I’m not skilled at putting my thoughts down, but ‘could of’! 😖 (I’m aware I have probably made lots of grammatical errors, in this post.) 😬
