Led down

As in "I was led down on the sofa when the doorbell rang".

Where does it originate from? It's so odd!

Have you just spotted this on another thread Grin I have.

Do they mean laid? Though that doesn't sound right either. Is it some variant?

Never heard or seen it before

Do you mean "lying down"? I've never heard "led down", although my DH, who is a northerner, often talks about "laying down".

They obviously mean "laid down" and it comes from the same stable as "I was sat there in tears" or "I was stood waiting".

"Lying down" > ""laid down" (incorrect/regional use of passive/past tense) -> "led" (phonetic spelling), I guess.

I think it's probably regional dialect
Dh says tret for treated which I find odd but he's from the NE and I'm from the south

It must be dialect. I've heard it in speech and assumed it was a pronunciation of "laid" but had never seen it written down as "led". It looks much odder written down than it sounds to hear it spoken!

It's dialect. They say it in Gloucester.
