The plural in this sentence is "types [of institution]", so you don't need to add another plural into the sentence.

But I would re-word it to: "There are many types of financial institution from which to choose..."

I find it hard to say if there is a hard and fast rule. Sometime "types of" + SINGULAR sounds right, sometimes "types of" + PLURAL does, especially if the plural is irregular:

I prefer certain types of men [man sounds odd?]
I work with three types of child [children might work]
I eat certain types of apple [apples definitely doesn't sound right to my ear]
These shoes only suit a few types of foot [but feet might work]
