Reign vs rein vs rain

I've never noticed this before but there must be some mad spell checkers out there.
I've seen 'reign' used multiple times this week where either 'rein' or 'rain' is correct.
So, queen's reign, you rein in a horse (or child) and clouds drop rain. So there.

A spellcheck checks spelling, not usage. Your example is a perfect example of why people should be taught to spell and not rely on spellcheckers, as it won't pick up any wrong usage of those as they are all correct spellings.

It's driving me mad. There's a thread on today about reigning in jealousy. I keep checking back to see if anyone's corrected it (feel pompous doing that, but I see I can speak freely here among friends. )

To start with I thought the poster was talking about wanting to be in charge of the situation although others were jealous turns out she is battling with herself to get control of her own jealousy. All the other posters are copying the spelling

And anyone who couldn't understand what the OP of the other thread meant has far worse issues with SPaG than she does, tbh.

Ok point taken Vintage it's the first time I've been on PC. I thought I could. I wouldn't have done it on the actual thread but wanted to vent!

I'd say the point of standard SPaG is to make language as understandable as possible. I had to read twice to understand what was meant.

Tell me about the glass houses though? (genuine question).
I translate and proof-read for a living and I hope I don't get too much wrong. :-)

Reigning in is annoying but I wouldn't correct it on here - people know whaat is meant (or if they don't, they probably wouldn't appreciate the correction )

There is also a thread on here about people not understanding common phrases. I think this is partly due to bad spelling! After all "reigning in" doesn't make any sense so doesn't help you understand the underlying meaning.
