Pedants' corner

Date formatting for CV

Hello,

I hope you pedants can help me with the correct way of writing a date range for a UK CV, when the post is still ongoing, i.e "2005 - to date: Empress of the World"

Do I need a hyphen between the year and "to date"? If so, would there be any spaces either side of the hyphen?

Thanks a lot!

In my mind the hyphen is in place of the word "to", so I wouldn't have both:

2005 - present: Empress of the World

or even just a blank:

2005 - : Empress...

Anyway, does this mean there's a vacancy coming up as Empress of the World? Is it open to men or is it exempt from equality legislation? Grin

ooh there's a step up for me, currently Queen of The World.

would QOTW not be under current position? So job list would end at the job before that? Which also neatly solves your dilemma.

No: the en-dash does the job of the word "to". "2014–date" would be odd, so I'd probably either write "2014–present" or "2014–"

But if you're being careful to not annoy fussy consumers of typescript, note that it's an en-dash (–), not a hyphen (-) and not an em-dash (—). On a Mac those are usually Alt+-, - and Shift+Alt+-, respectively. I guess similar on Windows. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dash for the grim details.

I tend to put "2013 to present" as I think it's clearer.

And WTS about using a dash or a proposition but not both.

Sorry for calling it a hyphen when it's a dash. I shall do my pedant penance later. Blush

The only thing I'd add is that "2010 - present" suggests that the role being referred to is ending now, while "2010 - " suggests you are continuing in the role. (Might be important distinction if say you are like my DW and have a patchwork of part-time roles with different clients / employers).

Thank you all so much for your help Flowers.

In return for it, you can all apply for the position of Empress of the World, whichever your sex.

Instead of an interview, you will each have to take on my responsibilities for 24 hours while I go on a silent retreat, just let me know who wants to go first! Grin

You're not going anywhere: if you've been running the world since 2005, I've got a few serious complaints that I'd like you to address. Do you want to start with the Middle East or the credit crunch? Grin

Well, for starters you just can't get decent minions these days. All the ones that applied to my adverts were yellow creatures who wore overalls to a job interview with the Empress of the World, FFS and were pretty useless. There's only so much One can do...

Can't you just hand it all over to the Queen of Fucking Everything for a day?
That's not me BTW I am far too busy being the Jack of All Trades
