The only thing worse than poor grammar is a pedant.

I disagree.

The only thing worse than a pedant is someone bitching out a pedant for posting pedantry in Pedants' Corner.

There's a menu option to hide topics 52. I strongly suggest you use it.

It could have been written with a lot more eloquence alright.

Hence why I posted in pedants corner.....

It's okay, Pipbin.

We understand.

Thank Gibb. If you can't be a pedant in pedants corner there is little hope for the country, given that those running the country haven't a clue.

I don't understand the logic of criticising a poster for pendantry, in a thread clearly posted in pedantry corner...

I'm with you, OP. "Would/could/should of" feels endemic. I understand the point being made but it's so distracting and I'm unlikely to take any further pronouncements seriously after such a school boy error.

In this topic I have found my people and can vent safely, please don't spoil it 52.

Fair enough

Am I allowed to point out though that John McD isn't running the country...?

No.

Or yes. It's Pedant's Corner, after all. Maybe you need your own thread though? [overthinking]

The very least of John McDonnell's problems is his illiteracy; he also thinks that foment and ferment are synonyms, of course.

On the other hand, it's noticeable that when he comes to paeans of praise for terrorists, his grammar is much more fluent. Perhaps he invests more effort in that.

It’s about time we started honouring those people involved in the armed struggle. It was the bombs and bullets and sacrifice made by the likes of Bobby Sands that brought Britain to the negotiating table. The peace we have now is due to the action of the IRA. Because of the bravery of the IRA and people like Bobby Sands, we now have a peace process.

The errant 'Of' is my pet hate. I mean, it makes no grammatical sense whatsoever. It's no typo, or spelling issue, it's a word with a completely different meaning to the one it replaces.

Well his isn't directly as he isn't in the party in power, but as an elected MP he is in the sense that he will debate and vote for laws etc.

Someone will come and tell us it's a perfectly fine and natural evolution of the English language in a minute Wink

Top tip: when commenting on Pedants' Corner, don't write:
Pedants Corner
Pedant's Corner
pendantry
Grin

"could of" is unacceptable in edited publications (novels, newspapers etc avoid it), so I'm not going to get too worked up about its appearance in throwaway, conversational situations like texts and tweets. After all, in speech, "could've" and "could of" are pretty indistinguishable, but we don't have any problem understanding meaning.

I was going to say grammar is the least of John McDonnell's problems, however Ricardian was there first..

Still, he's got Jeremy Corbyn's grammar-school educated son working for him to help. NIce to see Labour's opposition to selection and nepotism is working well for the young lad.
