Totally agree Grin

I even have to elongate the "oo" sound when I read it.

Mine was fab! We had a house party with my mates and all of my female relatives! No trashy cliches allowed!

Report
mupperoon · 22/01/2015 21:31

But was it a do or a doo(oooooo)?

I don't know the difference! Enlighten me!

Haha! Mupperoon is complaining about the misspelling, not the concept of stag and hen parties.

Dh talks about dooooooooos
But he does it ironically
They seem to be called hens these days anyway. 'Do' is just a syllable too far

Doo makes me think of poo (doo doo perhaps?)

Which does mean that "stag/hen doo" actually makes sense

Report
tribpot · 22/01/2015 22:10

doo is a Scots word for pigeon. "Hen pigeon" takes it to a new level.

Interesting question about how you pluralise 'do' like hen do or hair-do. "Does" doesn't look right because you don't pronounce it 'dooz'. "Dos" doesn't look right because you would pronounce it 'doss'.

iklboo I don't know whether to laugh or cry!

tribpot Hmmm, luckily the plural of dos (hen ones specifically) has not been a problem for me hitherto!

morethan Apologies, your post did remind me to start the thread, but I'd been meaning to doo it for a while, having noticed a spate of does round Xmas.

It is Pedants' Corner after all.

mupperoon - you wrote Xmas. Erk. Or is it only me who finds that abbreviation a bit ugly? (Not sure why).

Report
PetulaGordino · 23/01/2015 10:01

do you find it ugly in centuries-old manuscripts? it's a very very old abbreviation

"stag does" would be very confusing
