My dd's primary school teacher has agreed fastly is a word but according to him it means quickly

Gah!

Shall I buy him a dictionary for Christmas!

It is a word. Synonyms would be tightly, securely. It's a very archaic word, though.

It's relates to 'fastness' isn't it? As in 'he held fast to the rope'.

I think steadfast comes from the same root.

"Hold fast". Sure.
"Held fastly" - no problems if it's 1650 (but it ain't).

"Fastly" has never meant quick but I wouldn't sweat it. She sounds like a pretty good teacher whose saying the concept is right and the grammar will come. She's encouraging vocabulary building and all it's all good (1650 or not).

Anyway - why shouldn't fastly mean quickly?
