Apostrophes are just '.

[relaxes jaw]

Trills Fri 14-Oct-11 19:55:53

Do people actually go to the effort of reaching all the way over there <-- to the ` key?

CertainlyToomsRemains Fri 14-Oct-11 20:09:11

That's what puzzles me Trills.

It's all nonsenical if it takes more effort to do it.

Harecare Fri 14-Oct-11 20:13:32

I have never seen anyone use ` or " for '.
Where have you seen them used?

CertainlyToomsRemains Fri 14-Oct-11 20:30:12

Quotation marks here today.

I have seen ` around a fair bit.

nickelbabe Sat 15-Oct-11 13:12:56

I don't have one of those slanted ones on my keyboard.

If you are writing it, however, it's 9

caughtinanet Sat 15-Oct-11 13:42:51

I worked for a boss who persisted in using the ` for apostrophe. I've never seen it before or since I wondered if his keyboard was broken as I just couldn't see how an otherwise very bright person could think it was correct.

Until just now I didn't even know where the key was, you're right, it is so much more effort to do it wrongly.

nickelbabe Sat 15-Oct-11 13:47:06

but it does make sense if you're used to a typewriter - some of the old typewriters had the apostrophe to the left of the 1.
some had it above the 8.

Posts typed in Word documents and then copy/pasted onto a forum can change ' into the very slanty one which I cannot find on my iPad.

I used to moderate a forum which had a recurring troll we secretly nicknamed the Word Troll because of this feature of her posts. She never cottoned on.

nickelbabe Wed 19-Oct-11 15:34:50

they normally change them to ? though.

Psammead Wed 19-Oct-11 15:36:58

Yes, sometimes. Especially copy/pasting into email.

I think it depends on the format of the website or email.

I feel inspired by your enthusiasm for the valuable snippet of little known information that I have imparted upon you.

nickelbabe Wed 19-Oct-11 16:09:07

it was enthusiasm! shock
I was contemplating it, see?

Psammead Wed 19-Oct-11 16:11:23

Oh ok.

I misread and misunderstood your intent.

The 'mmm' did make me literally laugh out loud. It was quite exquisite as far as bored, off-hand general murmmerings go on the internet grin

nickelbabe Wed 19-Oct-11 16:13:21

i aim to please.

I didn't want to put hmm in case you thought i meant hmm

I'd read it in the sort of tone that you make when your mom is wittering on at you about Sandra from the MilkBar's cousin's sister, you know, the one with the 3 legged hamster called Floutreash?

Not really listening, but carry on anyway.

And Spammy's response was a thing of beauty.

nickelbabe Wed 19-Oct-11 16:19:53

Chaos, that would be "yes, dear"

Psammead Wed 19-Oct-11 16:22:48

Chaos, me too. Sort of that dismissive 'yes dear' stock reply I generally give when DH starts whittering on about turning off lights, screwing bottle tops on properly and having sex.

Psammead Wed 19-Oct-11 16:23:28

Ha! X-post.

You do it too!

SayGhoulNowSayWitch Wed 19-Oct-11 16:26:39

<Ponders whether the post title should be

It is " ' ". Nothing else.

it should be
It is '. Nothing else.

You don't need speechmarks around it anyway.

Wallace Wed 19-Oct-11 16:30:59

I have never seen the `¬ key on my keyboard before shock
