'Waiting on'

Ok is it me or have I got this completely wrong? I have read so much about people 'waiting on' things to arrive (from mail-order companies etc). I always thought that 'waiting on' referred to people who worked in restaurants etc. Should it not be 'waiting for'? Confused

i think it is a regional dialect thing -it is an expression in use where I live.
