Valpollicella Mon 13-Dec-10 22:25:14

...said by me to DS this evening.

DP overheard and says, "No, it isn't? It's nearly two weeks away"

Me:"Errrm hmm Well it's not 'this' Saturday is it?"

DP: "No, because this Saturday is 'next Saturday' Christmas Day is on 'the' next Saturday"

Me: <rolls eyes> "Fine, I'll start a thread..."

Please, I know I'm right, aren't I?

And I know I am, I'm only really posting this so I can get some back up and show him the thread

tethersjinglebellend Mon 13-Dec-10 22:27:29

I'm with you sister.

I have lost friends over this one.

mylifewithmangers Mon 13-Dec-10 22:27:33

Sorry, but I'm with your DP.

Don't make it any closer than it has to be. Please.

EatingAngelPie Mon 13-Dec-10 22:27:46

Xmas is saturday week.

tethersjinglebellend Mon 13-Dec-10 22:28:12

<sits on hands over thread title>

edam Mon 13-Dec-10 22:28:12

I'd say 'a week on Saturday'.

Clary Mon 13-Dec-10 22:30:16

OK when I hear "next Saturday" on a Monday, I clarify with the speaker which Saturday they mean.

Certainly "the Saturday of next week" is one possible meaning; as is "the next Saturday we get to".

If it was Thursday or so then I think you mean the former; on a Monday it's debatable. To be clear, I personally would say "Saturday next week".

Rindercella Mon 13-Dec-10 22:31:11

Christmas <ahem> grin Day is a week on Saturday.

TheSleepFairy Mon 13-Dec-10 22:31:16

This saturday coming is this saturday.
the following saturday is next saturday & also christmas day.

Valpollicella Mon 13-Dec-10 22:31:31

Thanks Tethers grin

I might just have to do a cut and paste job into Word and print it for him, if it looks like I am wrong <rare>

<bangs head against wall at sp in title>

So sorry.

Please blame the head full of gunk I have courtesy of weird flu thing...

That's also why I need MN back up with this argument...too weary to retaliate as usual grin

Hulababy Mon 13-Dec-10 22:33:35

To me, next Saturday is the next Saturday we get to - so in this case in 5 days time.

Christmas Day is a week on Saturday.

gonaenodaethat Mon 13-Dec-10 22:33:52

I'm with you. Christmas is next Saturday.

ClaireDeLoon Mon 13-Dec-10 22:34:06

I think Saturday week would be Christmas Day, this Saturday would be 18th and next Saurday would be ambiguous.

Hassledge Mon 13-Dec-10 22:35:51

You're wrong, he's right. Sorry.
The next Saturday which will occur is the 18th December. So that's next Saturday. It is the next time that a Saturday will occur.

tethersjinglebellend Mon 13-Dec-10 22:36:06

So, nexters, when people say "this Saturday", what on earth do you think they mean? confused

Hassledge Mon 13-Dec-10 22:37:01

1. Nearest in space or position; adjacent: the next room.
2. Immediately following, as in time, order, or sequence: next week; the next item on the list.

So that would be the 18th, then.

mylifewithmangers Mon 13-Dec-10 22:37:50

This Saturday and Next Saturday are not mutually exclusive though

Hassledge Mon 13-Dec-10 22:38:03

If someone today said to me "this Saturday", I would have no idea whether they meant the 11th or the 18th. "This" is vague. "Next" is specific.

Starisonthetree Mon 13-Dec-10 22:40:16

I'm celebrating next Saturday, but then the real Christmas a week on Saturday - it's just the family can only get together on the 18th. Sorry think your dp is right

FunnysInTheGarden Mon 13-Dec-10 22:40:16

Christmas is next Saturday, this Saturday is the 18th.

tethersjinglebellend Mon 13-Dec-10 22:40:50

Ok, so "next week" starts when?

Why is Saturday (*this* week) next Saturday?

You're all mad (apart from Valpollicella)

Grrr, Hassledge, you and your witty xmas namechange wink

Preggersplayspop Mon 13-Dec-10 22:41:06

I turned up for a netball match once a week early because of this very issue. Though, i was RIGHT obviously and they were WRONG. I was in primary school and was devastated. I always check what people mean now.
