Punctuation of names on Facebook

It disturbs me slightly to see apostrophes missing from names such as O'Connor, or names like McLaren typed as Mclaren. Also double barrelled names where one name (usually the last one) doesn't have a capital letter.

Confused

does it disturb you because people are not putting apostrophes in other people's names, or their own?

Because if it is their name, presumably they have every right to spell/punctuate it however they see fit.

However, if people are getting it wrong, then that's different...

Some websites don't allow punctuations in a name field (speaking as someone with a double barrelled surname who gets irked by these websites).

It always used to be a faff to change your name on FB (not sure about how it works now). My brother put in a typo when he was creating his account and it took ages for him to work out how to fix it and get it changed.

O[space]Something is a perfectly valid Irish surname form. Dara O Briain, for example, is definitely Dara O Briain and not Dara O'Briain. It being his actual name I'm not sure that the fact that it disturbs you slightly will be featuring heavily on his radar.
