He is not "into" anything in particular this year. He has lots of toys, puzzles, games, arts and craft stuff, things to do in the garden - but he doesn't really play with anything. Prefers hanging around me.

You have to force him to go upstairs/outside to play on his own and when he eventually does, he will only do it for about 15 mins then he's back. He loves Hot WHeels but will only play it if DH helps him set it up (even though he could set it up on his own).

He asked for a Wii, but we don't really think he will play with it that much, and would rather wait until he is a bit older. Ditto for a Nintendo DS - we feel that he needs to do things independently from us - like go and play imaginatively or creatively on his own at least for an hour a day. We give him lots of attention every day, and do loads with him, but sometimes we just need to all do different things.

Is there a toy that boys really like that they can play on their own, but with friends too when they come round?

Lego?

We have tons and it is played with every day.

You can get some really good deals on it on eBay.

Playmobil? A friendÅ› DS (6 1/2 now) has the castle which is always a hit when thereÅ› a houseful of boys. Scalectrix (spelling?) a good one with a friend too, especially if heÅ› already into cars. HTH.
