Baby’s 1st Birthday- Joys/Regrets?

So DS will be turning one right after the holidays, and while I am certainly NOT doing any planning yet, ideas are creeping into my mind, and I’d love to hear from other mums what they were glad about or regretted about doing baby parties. See, I’m not sure we’ll even do a proper party, because I’m not sure it’s needed.

For context, we live in W Sussex, and have made some baby friends (along with their parents), but all our family is in SE London. Our place is not big enough to host more than a couple people, so that’s out. I imagine we’d just do a party at MIL’s house...I'd feel a little bad leaving out our new friends, but wouldn’t want them to feel obligated getting up to London.

My main reason for doing a party at all is it’s a great reason to get family and friends together, and let some of the people we don’t see very often have a chance to see the baby.

So- yes or no to doing a party? What did you do for yours that you thought was great? What was not worth it? I’d love to know!

For each of ours we had family round. (Sounds like this would be in your MiL's house).
I'm extremely glad of those memories and photos, due to the people we lost not long after those days.
What I wish is that we'd taken more video.
I'm glad we didn't stress about 'themes' or making it into a much bigger thing.
I'm glad we got family together at some point around each of the dcs' birthdays each year when they were little.

Had DD 1st birthday party x2 (some people were overseas) each done at grand parents house glad it was at home easy to dash for things when you need to.and is familiar surroundings for your LO
Also dont expect children to eat/drink much as they are so excited.
Cousin had 1st birthday party for her twin boys in a hall they cried the whole time!

We planned a proper party, but illness scuppered it. In the end when we'd all recovered we took a cake up to the local park and met our friends. That was it. It was, in hindsight, so much more enjoyable and less stressful than a "proper" party. I have a lovely photo of 5/6 babies sitting in a row with a bit of chocolate cake.

We're planning a family-only birthday party for DS, really as an opportunity for both sets of grandparents to socialise together - they rarely do as they live in different countries.

My NCT group is also planning a birthday gathering for all of the babies.

Thank you, all, for the comments, they are really helpful! I reckon I should go with my gut and do something casual at MIL’s house, and maybe a group birthday party with our local baby friends (not an nct group but they are all roughly same age)!

I suppose it will be nice to have photos of a celebration, and with family members who may not be around in years to come. And I must remember to do video! :)
