Tell me your best party bag stuff for 6 year olds!

I've done books from The Book People in the past, but had quite disgruntled kids, so I'm looking for something that's not disposable tat but which the kids will like. Budget is about £1 a bag, and I'm also going to put in a balloon and a fairy cake.

It's girls and boys aged 5-6, and the entertainer is doing a pirates and princesses theme, but I'd be happy to do something that wasn't themed, too.

Any ideas?

I've had plastic mugs from the Works before, then put pens or sweets in them. Glow sticks go down well as well, and are easy to wrap into pass the parcel.

I got Disney books from the book people and it went down really well. I know some parents even copied it for their next party. So I'm surprised...

Glow sticks are always well received and play doh or plasticine. Or you could just buy a bag of plastic tat for £5 from eBay and go with the flow...

Oh just thought... paper cup, crayons and grass or cress seeds. Add some Pom Poms and googly eyes and make some silly faces. My DS might do that! Or sunflower seed planting set?

Some kind of inflatable toy to go with the theme of the party: a guitar, microphone, animal, instrument etc? They are about a pound each.

Tennis ball each - seriously they will love them, boys and girls alike and prob only cost about 50p each

Bubble mixture, felt tip pens.

One year I put some post-it notes in, they went down well. Tesco do great blocks of them in loads of colours.

Lots of good ideas, thanks! I don't know why books didn't go down well, but they really didn't when I tried it. I'm thinking twisty straw, tennis ball, post it pad plus the fairy cake and a balloon should do it.

Someone we know went to a sports shop and bought discounted footballs for all the kids - think they were down to a pound.

Home Bargains have fairy doors for 89p and packs of fairy stickers for 39p which might be an option for the girls who don't like football?

Bucket and spade set from poundland. Think I saw them in the other day, our store ordered in more for me. They can be used at park or beach. They are useful but fun and you can pop the cake and sweets in them. Have gone down well with children and parents and still see some years later.

I know what you mean about books I have never done them but have seen others do them and they have always left the kids disappointed

You could do cheap sweeties for the party bag plus each child gets a £1 toy from pound shop or similar have seen this done and it usually goes down well

We like a yellow stretchy man from eBay, bouncy balls and those tiny packets of bubbles that don't burst. Kids also like those balloons that you blow up with a straw that make a noise when you let them go.

The most-loved party item I ever put in bags was an ice cream popper (it is plastic but not totally tatty and the kids loved them, they lasted ages too). All ages and genders liked them too. Buckets and spades are a great idea!

I am hosting a party next week for 38 children for my 6 year old. It's a glow in the dark party so bit easier for me, glowsticks and led finger lights will feature alongsidge sweet cones as favours (finally given in to this sweets idea as much as i dont like giving sweets but couldnt find much else i thought was great). Will add a small toy in here for the younger siblings rather than all sweets.

I have also ordered some shutter shades off ebay (£9.99 for a 12 pack) which they can put in their bags too afterwards.

Still looking for that amazing party bag gift though, 1 week to go...

Sand timers? I was having same thoughts of you for something useful...

You can get mini packs off Amazon, not a toy as such but something 6 year olds could use at home. There were some mixed reviews but some good too...

And if all else fails, my ds1 wants me to put a whoopee cushion in for ihs closest friends. Sweets and whoopee cushions totally against my ethics but hey ho. Should never have spoken until after I had kids!

Our best ever party bags toys have been whoopee cushions and bendy pencils, both from Amazon.

This is really random and only just occurred to me but what about those cupcake baking kits you see in the supermarket , usually with characters they'd recognise? My main aim always is to not leave parents with clutter that isn't used so at least edibles disappear. We usually do books / packets of seeds. I do also like silly putty.

I got pens from the works that stacked up to make one big pen and the 7 year olds loved them (may have used them as light sabers though) they worked out as 30/50p each as they were on offer. A small notebook and the ever loved bouncy ball which I got in the sale at Baker Ross
