Help, MN, pleeeeeeease...

DD has grown up with DS having very "themed" parties (knights, space, science, dragons) and so far has had "princesses (and pirates)" (the pirates were my idea) and "jungle".

She has declared that she wants a "dancing" party for her 5th birthday. As a theme, I just don't think it works - I can't dance, so I would have to get someone in, even if I find someone then they can't dance for 2 hours, and I can't do angelina ballerina-type theming or it will put the boys off (I hate gender-specific parties) - but I need an alternative theme to sell to her or I am in big trouble...

My six year old just had a disco dancing party. Lots of boys there. The 'dances' were games as well and it kept everyone interested. They made the room dark, like a disco, with flashing lights.

Disco? really? for 5yos (and she is the oldest in her year, so actually for 4yos)? Is that not an invitation for little girls dressed like mini adults posing around in a dubious fashion? I am really not sure I can stomach that (although I am sure DD would love it)....

I'm being boring, I know, but......

I think you are brave to do any kind of party , i would hire a bouncy castle, have a 'elf and fairy theme', maybe in the village hall or (if you have one) the garden. Disco doesn't have to be grown up (although i see where you are coming from with the girls dressed as adults).

trouble is, Marne - expectation has been set - all DS's parties (and DD's 3rd and 4th) have been DIY ones - and very themed. Rod for my own back, in a big way - I wasn't going to do a party for her 3rd birthday at all, but she came home from nursery and announced "I am having a princess party, and I have invited X,Y & Z"

If either of them had summer birthdays, a bouncy castle in the garden it would be, but they don't.

Dammit. Jungle was my only brilliant idea for a gender-neutral theme I could sell to DD, and I used that last year. I did think about Farm, but a fair few of her classmates actually live on farms, so I don't think they would be impressed by that. Similarly ponies - DD would love it, but all those who have ponies at home would be [meh].

We are going to a 'Disco party' tomorrow for a 6 year old, i am not looking forward to it as my dd2 has ASD and sensory problems (she hates noise so 20 screaming kids and loud music will be hell for her), my favorite parties are 'craft parties' where all the children sit nicely and make/stick/paint things. Dd1's friend had a dinosaur themed party, they made badges and other verious dinosaur things and had their faces painted, she thought it was great , a jungle party sounds good.

sleepover theme? Turn up in your pajamas, make pizza, decorate gingerbread men, decorate a plain pillow case (they can all sign it in fabric pens) few games of who's in the blanket etc job done

Marne, DD hates noise too (one of many issues with disco party) - Jungle party was, if I say so myself, fab. We covered the ceiling of the hall in camouflage net and all the 100's of cuddly animals we own - pinned tail on tiger, did jungle crafts, and had soothing "jungle noise" CD running in the background.

Ballroom dancing? Not sure how you could do that really though unless you fill a room full of balls! :o

Re disco parties - this might be a bit late as you might have had your party by now - but my DD declared she wanted a disco party when she was 4. I had reservations too, but in the end went with it.

I bought a cheap disco light thing from Argos and got her a silver dress and bought silver decorations, plates, silver balloons etc. I also got one of those silver streamer door decorations for them to walk through when they arrived (all a bit 70s and 80s!). Most of this was off Ebay and party websites.

To start with we had cardboard disco glasses and also cardboard microphonesfor them to colour in, with disco stickers (stars, musical notes) and glitter pens. I made the glasses and microphones myself. But with hindsight that was a lot of work and colouring pages might have been easier!

I also got some plastic inflatable guitars (popular with the boys), silver deely boppers, silver and gold dancing wands (the sort gymnasts use), silver wigs.... and they mostly played with all of those and ran about madly, as children do... there was no adult-type posing or anything, I don't think most of them really knew what a disco was anyway!

If I'd had more time/money some face painting would have been good too - you could have had stars, glitter etc, Ziggy Stardust type faces! (you can tell I am a 70s child).

My daughter helped us make up a music cd to have at the party with some children's songs, but also some disco songs (eg Abba, Kylie). We played some dancing games - musical statues, silliest dancer etc.

In the party bags I put a cd copy of all the music we had played at the party and it was very popular (although all the mothers were probably cursing me later!).

So I think you can definitely do a disco party for younger children without it being too adult, it doesn't even have to be too dark, just think glittery stuff and music!

DH came to the rescue and talked DD into a cooking party instead
