What to wear?

Bear with me, I am a fairly clueless first time mum, and mumsnetters were pretty much spot on when they told me what to get her in 0-3 size

DD 5 weeks is pretty much too long for all of her 0-3months vests and babygros so looking at buying her some 3-6 month stuff. So what is the ideal "capsule wardrobe"

Can I keep her in vests and babygros or is that just plain lazy?

How many layers does she need in these warmer months? (she seemed quite hot in vest and babygro when we went out with sling today)

She is carried in sling if that makes a difference?

She wears reusable nappies if that makes a difference?

Presumably barefoot is a no no because of sunburn? (feet hang outside of sling)

Any other tips on what to buy/avoid?

Thankyou...

It's been a while, so I'm rather rusty (my DD is now 2.9) but I wouldn't put a vest and a babygro thingy on in this weather. It depends on whether she is naturally a warm baby or not, though, I suppose. Mine was/is always warm.

I bought loads of clothes but, for the first few months, she pretty much lived in babygros and those cooler ones which have short sleeves and no feet in them. I'd get some of those for summer.

With regard to her feet and the sling, I'd just put plenty of factor 50/60 on them or just socks. I wouldn't bother with little shoes as they're more trouble than they're worth IMO (although I did buy DD some Dior ones which she never wore).

Hopefully, someone more recently experienced will come on now and give you some better advice.

Oh, and congratulations... I know it probably doesn't feel like it now but it won't be long before you look back on this time and find it hard to believe how tiny your little girl was.

I carried dd2 in a Moby wrap a lot last summer. I found babygros with out a vest was generally fine. I dont think there is any need for 'real' clothes at this age. I also found a big cardigan with I could wrap round both of us really useful.

Hi OP, My dd1 was a May baby. The summer when she was your dd's age was very hot. She mostly wore the little romper suits with short sleeves and short legs like these

They are cute and practical and you can get dressier ones for 'special occasions'

Didn't use a sling so not sure about that part.

HTH

Would agree with BDSM and suiledone. THose kind of outfits are perfcet.

Also well done on not going out and buying little grown up outfits. Idid with DS1 but DS2 stayed in babygros much longer.

Thanks for the advice

Looking ahead, would you recommend babygros or clothes for 6-12months? (Work just gave me a pile of Frugi vouchers )

My eldest was in mini clothes asap as I just couldn't wait, but with the younger 2 I left them in babygros much longer and think they are comfier and so much easier. I think by the time they are sitting and crawling (6 months +) proper clothes are probably better, but it's all personal choice really isn't it?

Short romper suits are fab. Another fan of those here. I found a few in M&S, but they can be difficult to find so grab them when you see them. Alternatively, a popper vest with a soft cotton pair of shorts works well.

My DS wore a lot of babygros until about 12 months, although I gradually mixed in more 'real' clothes. They mean you aren't forever picking up lost socks or tucking their tops back in, and the baby doesn't have to deal with bulky waistbands. His 'proper' clothes were always soft cotton lycra type stuff (jogging bottoms, long sleeved tshirts) rather than jeans or chinos and shirts, because those fabrics are all a bit stiffer and just not so comfortable for little wriggly babies I think.

FWIW, he wore reusables and we never had a problem getting him to fit in babygros etc., but he was and is skinny so maybe that had something to do with it. If your DD is a chubby baby so you find high street stuff doesn't fit, you can get some lovely clothes cut to fit reusables - Cut4cloth is one manufacturer I think.
