7 mo keeps bumping head - how can baby proof?

My DS is 7mo on friday. He's a pretty good crawler now and this morning started to pull himself up on our newspaper rack. He can get onto his knees no probs, but managed to pull up onto his feet once, then promptly fell over and bumped his head on the laminate floor. He then howled for over an hour (there's no bump, no neuro signs and it was more of a pissed off cry then a pain cry, was going to call NHS Direct but after some Calpol and lunch he's now snoozing happily) He's trying lots of new things at the moment (also today he got from his belly to sitting on his own, which is impressive as last weeks he couldn't sit unaided for more than a minute!!) I don't have a playpen or really have room for one, so he's currently barricaded in the front of the lounge btween two sofas and the TV bench using the paper rack (sturdy as has lots of catalougues in but too low to be pulled over) there's a rug covering most of this space but there is laminate round the edges which he keeps bopping himself on, but I'm not sure what I can do about it? A fellow mum said not to worry as soon he'll be better at stuff so won't topple over as often but I'm actually worried more as I think he'll be pulling up and cruising soon which will be round the edge where the wood is.

Can't afford to get new carpets!

Any suggestions?????

first of all, he's pulling himself up at 7mo? bloody hell!!

I really wouldn't worry too much, he's unlikely to do any serious damage on a laminate floor and he will soon learn to be more careful. you could maybe try putting another rug or some cushions around the areas he usually tries to stand, but apart from that i don't think there's much you can. My DD1 went through a phase of hurting herself on everything when she started crawling, its how they learn!

Just make sure there are no sharp edges to land on.

They don't fall far and rarely really hurt themselves.

It's a learning process and as they learn they begin to understand how to stop themselves falling.

he will get used to it and learn to guard his head soon.

we have solid blue slate floors throught the downstairs of our house and i have an aversion to rugs, so i was paraniod about my DS bashing his head when learning to walk.

but he only actually properly bashed his head two or three times. he quickley learnt a kind of duck and roll manouvre to protect his head when he lost his balance.

Thanks. I'll see what happens over the next few days and see if I can strategically place cushions around. although it's lovely seeing him progress, I would be happy for him to be stationary for a bit longer!
