Has your DH/DP never changed a nappy?

If not, why not? Is it his decision or yours?

DH asked me to post this as we've met a few mums recently who've complained about this and he's curious - also surprised by the "ooh, isn't he a good dad" comments whenever he's spotted changing DD's (which is all the time when we're out and about).

We don't have nappies anymore but dh changed his fair share of them when dd wore them, even the pooey ones.

I wouldn't have had it any other way, and luckily neither would he.

Dh probably does more than me!!!

I knew someone who had never changed a nappy and their son was 16 months old - i would have gone balistic. This same guy had never fed the child or got up int he night to them.

Divorce would be on the cards me thinks.....

My sister has three children (they're all teenagers now), and her dh never changed a single nappy. His excuse was that he didn't know how; my reaction would have been "now's the time to learn", but he got away with it.

DH probably changes more than I do too. He also does nearly all baths. He's marvellous

My dh did his fair share too. Still does.

Although we did everything in turns when she was newborn like night feeding, baths and nappy changing and for about the first 2 weeks he got out of every single pooey nappy. The jammy sod.

He's made up for missing out now though

my dh changed the first weeks' worth of nappies...i never left bed...

he still does at least 50/50 if not more...but i know he isn't typical.

Interesting, so far nobody here seems to have let their DHs off the hook

I'm still curious about mums who do though. Why would anyone choose to accept the 'I don't know how' line??? It's not like we're born knowing how - like a lot of people, I learned on the job, once DD was born!

DH changes pretty much every nappy when he's around - seems fair to me as I'm at home alone with DD for most of the week - if I didn't do them then, nobody would! Don't know what the big deal is anyway - most of the time it only takes a minute and once you've done a few you can do them in your sleep. So why make a point of avoiding them?

My DH does most of the nappies he's around for. As you say, if you do all the ones during the day, during the week, it only makes sense ...

When DS1 was tiny, DH had time off work, so he did all the nappies for the first month or so, and nearly all of them for the weeks after that (he worked 2 days/week for the first few months).

When we went in for a 6-week check, I remember a health visitor mocking him for not being good with the wipes - we never used wipes at home, always cotton balls! But she just assumed he never changed nappies. Grr.

My BIL used that line for everything, not only changing nappies. He couldn't make a cup of tea until they'd been married nearly a year, and then only did it (under protest) because my sister was heavily pregnant and too knackered to get up and make him one.

He couldn't use the microwave/oven/lawn mower/hoover/washing up gloves either.

Of course he does. Masses and masses. As many nappies as I can dodge. There were quite a few weekends when DD1 was small when I never changed a single one.

Who are these bizarre women allowing their partners to pull this stunt?

I'm a big fan of the "do you put salt in that?" way of getting out of doing things.

It works like this:

  • someone asks you to do something you don't want to do.
  • you ask really stupid alarming questions about how to do it, until they give up and do it themselves. (e.g., while making tea, "do you put salt in that?")
  • repeat as necessary, until you don't get asked to do it (or anything else) again.
