Travel cot?

This might sound silly... But I have a travel cot and not sure how to use it.

My little man is going to nannys on Wednesday and he's been in his normal cot for about 3 weeks and he's only just got used to it.

Problem is the travel cot doesn't have a mattress per se and I'm worried it might be a little hard. Do I need to put something there or pad it out? It just doesn't look comfortable to me.

Also, as he's just got used to the normal cot, will he freak out at a different sleeping place? I'll put his teddies around him but will this be enough? He's not been at nans since we started the cot routine..

I really have no idea and Google is useless!

Thanks ladies

just put a sheet on it. put your dc down in it for daytime naps ahead of whenever they need to sleep in it at night. i had similar concerns but it is fine, honest!

Yeah, just add a folded blanket then a sheet over the top.

I think Mothercare do sell thin mattresses for the travel cots too.

Agree with the comments about a few trial daytime naps to failiarise with it.

sheet will be fine, or if he's older than 6 months wrap a single duvet around the mattress then put sheet over.

Try and use a blanket that smells familiar to him, and as previous poster suggested, put him down for naps in it before hand.

TBH I found all travel cots crap, ds never slept in them, when he went to anyone elses house he tended to sleep in normal bed with bed gueard/surrounded by pillows to ensure he didnt fall out

If its going to be a regular thing, then you can buy proper mattresses to go into travel cots I used these, they were fab and will custom make a mattress to any size to ensure perfect fit

DS has always slept in our bed, however once when we went on holiday the bed in the hotel wasn't against a wall and we hadn't brought a guard, I spent the whole first night awake paranoid that DP was going to roll on DS, so the second night once he was asleep he went in the travel cot. No extra mattress and he wasn't used to sleeping in a cot at all, but he was fine and I don't think he even woke up.

Do say to your mum/MIL that it's ok to rock him to sleep or whatever works, it shouldn't mess up your routine at home because they realise that they have different routines for different environments.

Thank you so much for your replies, he's 6 months old in a few days so your duvet idea is a good one geordi....

I stopped the co-sleeping and put him in the cot - I'm still breastfeeding and so he'll lose that comfort before bed. He rolls far too much and is too strong to trust pillows to keep him still in my MILs bed as he used to (when he stayed there).

Tomorrow I'll open it up and let him stay in it - his naps are not in his cot yet as he hates it during the day. We'll see how it goes, any more tips are welcomed!

Thanks to everyone who's posted their advice xxx

just a post to reassure you really...

my son took longer than my eldest two to sleep through the night, and i was still getting up twice for feeds at nearly three months, the first time he was due to stay at MIL's he had never slept in his travel cot before so i was certain we were going to get a call saying come home he wont settle....

However the little monster made a fibber out of me and took his last feed went down no trouble and slept all through the night (no extra padding)for 10 hrs !! and he has done ever since couldnt believe it lol.
did slighty irritate me that he did it first for MIL as she immediatly put herself on a pedestal lol

So as op said they realise dif environment and adapt accordingly clever little things.

good luck x

Hi. We have a travel cot,and you can get a little mattress for them-I think Mothercare do them.I too thought it looked a bit uncomfortable without the mattress.Woopsi.
