how to get my dd to stop picking her lip...

my dd (now 2.5) has developed a habit of picking skin off her top lip. She started it last year when she developed a bit of cold and got chapped lips. She found a bit of dry skin and picked it off. Since then she does it nearly all the time and this week she has made it so sore that it has bled more than once.
She nows that she shouldn't so it as it makes it sore but what else can I try?

any ideas?

thanks - I have tried that. I've also tried taking a stick of lip balm everywhere too but she wipes it or licks it off.

Buy her one of those flavoured chapsticks and let her use it whenever she likes, like lipstick, instead of picking (maybe )

Snap, i'm also 25 and still do this. Yes it's sore and I make it bleed but I can't stop!!

starlover Tue 14-Jun-05 20:14:58

shalaa.. i make mine bleed too! My lips look horrible sometimes. and can't wear lipstick because it makes it all flaky. yuck.

and you too rickman?
i can't believe there are other people who do this... thought i was the only one!!!

debs26 Tue 14-Jun-05 20:18:09

i do this too. i read somewhere your lips get more flaky if you are lacking vit b or iron and mine do get worse around the time of the month or when im pregnant and therefore more anaemic than usual. vitamin tablets can help

sparklymieow Tue 14-Jun-05 20:19:56

whoops was just picking my lips when I read this... must stop....

shalaa Tue 14-Jun-05 21:29:26

ah we can finally stand up and say "yes I am a lip picker"! I'm disgusting because I pick my lip and flick the skin on to the floor. Being picking it since I can remember, tried every lip moisturiser known to man and nothing has worked. Looks horrid alot of the time but the skin goes weird if I don't pick it, it's like there's an air bubble trapped under the skin!

zebraZ Tue 14-Jun-05 21:32:15

I used to do it as a kid, too, but I did stop. Your lips will recover if you leave them alone long enough.
Go on girls, you can do it, all together now, 1...2...3...sit on your hands now!

starlover Tue 14-Jun-05 21:33:23

shalaa.. i am even worse.. i pick it and eat it!

oh, that sounds sooooo disgusting reading it! I hope no-one from any of my meet-ups appears on this thread!!!

zebraZ Tue 14-Jun-05 21:37:02

... and definitely not over a meal, starlover.

shalaa Tue 14-Jun-05 21:37:05

ah but bet you don't pick your nose!

I admit it, given half a chance I pick at anything...

helsi Tue 14-Jun-05 21:37:55

oh goodness me - look what I've started - I only asked (backing away sheepishly)

starlover Tue 14-Jun-05 21:38:45

lol zebra! i have tried soooooooo hard to stop. I use lipbalm ALL the time so that they don't get dry... but it only takes one night where my lips dry out and i just can't help it!!!

I do it more when i am nervous. Bet that makes me look great in job interviews!

p.s... i only pick my nose in secret! lol

shalaa Tue 14-Jun-05 21:40:46

I pick more when i'm nervous as well, glad to know i'm not the only one!

Bet were filling you were hope here aren't we helsi!

starlover Tue 14-Jun-05 21:42:25

i also chew mine when my hands are busy(ie, on here)

helsi Tue 14-Jun-05 21:42:30

oh the anguish - she's only 2.5!!

she currently looks like she has been punched and has a split lip!!

shalaa Tue 14-Jun-05 21:45:36

should see me when I get a spot, if it's under the skin I stick a pin in it!

God it's all coming out now

shalaa... me too!!!!

rickman YES! i am picking as we speak! and there is still a teeeeeeeeeny tiny little bit sticking up that i can't quite get, but will continue til it gets worse and worse!

I used to frequent a mental health forum online, and apparently there is an actual condition where people pick at their faces and stuff... it's a bit like trichotillomania (spelling?) where people pull their hair out... but it's where people are obsessed with picking at spots, or skin etc...
