What do you do if you attachment parent and one of your dc has to go into hospital?

I have 2 dds. 3.4 and 10 months old. I am a SAHM so they spend most of their time with me.

We co-sleep and I'm still breastfeeding dd2, mainly at night.

DD1 has asthma and has ended up in hospital twice this month. The first time DH took her in during the night and they fixed her up and sent her home after a few hours.

Last night he took her in around 10pm and they admitted her. He thinks they will send her home later today but it depends on how she is.

DH will have to work tomorrow. If dd1 has to stay in she will need someone with her (me) but I can't see how I can leave dd2 overnight.

I am so stressed about the situation. My MIL would take dd2 if needs be but the poor little thing will be so upset. She is very clingy for the past few weeks.

Have you had a similar situation? Hope did you cope?

Is there any possibility of the hospital letting you take DD2?

I would hate to leave my 10mo DS overnight so can understand how stressed you must be feeling

When this happened (near miss thankfully). Overnight DH would stay, have the day off to look after other dcs and bring dc4 in to feed.

Could you ask MIL to stay at the hospital with DD1?

I agree with Riven - just take the baby with you.

As a single parent of two asthmatics, I have become fabulously stroppy about saying "There is no other option, I had to bring her or leave her on her own."

You do have an option, expect that she won't get fed, but as the staff will be used to people like me turning up with two exhaused kids in tow, they wobn't be surprised at the reply "I can't leave the baby"

I brought ds2 with me to the hospital when dd broke her leg, they were considering admitting her for the night and seemed very accepting of the fact that that would mean me lurking around with ds2 all night... although that being said i think it was a factor in them letting her go home as he was getting crabby

can your dh not take parental leave or apply for 'force majuer (sp?)'

when ds2 was in the hospital dp took time off work to stay home with the elder two as it was all traumatic enough without him having to go out to work too, although we had my parents willing to stay with them.

at the end of the day it's a childrens ward, there will probably be babies as young as dd2 on the ward so it's not like she'll disturb the patients or anything and the staff will be well used to parents who don't have childcare having to bring siblings with them to the hospital, just bring her!

Thanks everyone. I'll plan for taking her if dd1 has to stay in again tonight. She has been in a few times for a few hours but the last time she was admitted like this she was in for 5 days. I didn't have dd2 then so it was less complicated.

DH is self employed as a trainer. As luck would have it he started teaching a new course yesterday. He has taken today off but he is worried if he takes more time the client could bring in a new trainer. Financially that would be a disaster as it is 4 months work.
