Anyone had any experience of having to take away a comforter....not sure what to do...

This is not something I necessarily want to do, I am just at my wits end with it and can't work out a solution! My DS has a floppy rabbit / comfort blanket thing that he takes to bed & when he cuddles it he sucks his thumb. He is only 4.5 & I am not worried about this in itself or the thumbsucking as he will grow out of it & they are only milk teeth. my problem is that when he does it he has got into the habit of sticking his fingers up his nose & we are being woken a lot by bad nose bleeds. we have trimmed finger nails right back, talked to him about it, he gets upset by them, doesn't want the nosebleed but it is such a habit. any advice would be great. just not sure what to do, don't necessarily want to take the toy away but the only way I can think of to stop the nose bleeds is to stop the thumbsucking and it is all linked! Anyone out there able to help?! thanks.

Sounds like he may be doing this in his sleep? Hard to see how taking his blanket away would change that?
The only thing I can think of is to try and physically prevent him putting his fingers up his nose. Maybe put something strong smelling on his fingers?

i know this is not in the least bit helpful -but how on earth does he breathe?? His mouth and nose are blocked! Kids really are such strange creatures

surely the blanket/rabbits not the problem.its the fingers up nose etc?
i think even if you took it away hed suck his thumb because thats a habit.]

agree with strong smelly stuff on fingers-i used a horrid thing to stop me biting my nails once-that might work(didnt work on me i washed it off

Thank you everyone! I wonder how he breathes as well! Am not sure if it is entirely in his sleep, I think it is more when he is drifting in and out of sleep, a kind of semi-conscious habit & then the blood completely wakes him up! I agree I am not sure taking the rabbit away is the answer, it was just everything seemed linked i.e. only sucks thumb when has rabbit etc. Like the idea of putting something strong smelling on his fingers and possibly his thumb as I think he only does it when sucking. Seem to remember my parents putting something horrid on my nails to stop me biting as well! Will give it a try. Thanks all.
