There must be an easier way of finding that crucial piece of Lego that doesn't involve searching through to huge boxes of assorted pieces.

I haven't got one but someone once recommended one of those big plastic tool boxes that open out with lots of little compartment for screws and nails, which sounded ideal. You can get them fairly cheap from DIY stores.

I'm sure I've seen some sort of lego sorter where you can separate the pieces by size.

Our method seems to be to have lots of lego in one large box and then finding the right part by accident. I don't recommend this method

Our method is to spend £££ on fancy sets that the DC have drooled over for months, build them, wait for them to fall apart when played with, then chuck into the boxes with all the other broken dreams. That way, no part is ever crucial.

i use divided plastic boxes from ikea. lego is all sorted according to shape and size.

it always stays that way.

ds1 has lots of those little ikea storage boxes with different size drawers.
All the tiny coloured pieces go in one, white in another, wheels in another etc etc. They do work... ish. We have to have a big sort out once a year or so.

I saw and drooled over that sorting box whilst googling- we sooooo need it/several but dp would leave me if I spent that plus postage.

Thanks for the Ikea tip,what section are those boxes in?Ashamed to say an excuse to buy more Ikea storage is actually quite an exciting prospect, especially storage with compartments

There are various drawers you can get. We have 6 painted and stacked up, but then, ds1 has an awful lot of lego

We have a huge plastic tub that is not very deep (about 15cm) so it is fairly easy to sort through.

Storing lego in small compartments stifles creativity IMO.

The eternal question of lego storage!!

DH bought boxes from a DIY store that have little compartments in - 2 large and 2 small boxes. Lots of compartments. Lots of ways to store. Was a nightmare.

I bought this table and lots of Trofast boxes with lids from Ikea and store by colour. All the boxes fit on the shelf under the table or on the floor under the table. Table is kept clear for lego projects.

DH is dismayed. DS looks for a particular piece and we just have to search ONE box and not 4 with various compartments.

Works for me!

Ours is all stuffed into one drawer, because the boys just arent into lego anyway; dh got all excited and ordered shedloads through work, just because "I loved it as a child"

Look what has become of me-I can guarantee that 6 years ago I soooo would not be getting excited over a plastic box site.

I also loves Ingles wooden boxes as I could....... paint each one in a different colour and sort said Lego into the correct colour box. A painting project and storage with compartments all in one go- sadly excited emoticon!!!!!!!!

Also rather like Buda's coffee table idea as it would also solve the foot crunching,broken model wailing problem.

I'm a bugger for organising DS's toys, I used to work in a nursery where everything was organised so its kind of in me now!
We've got two of these in the living room, they're fab. I'm one marker pen away from labelling them!
We're still on Duplo at the moment so the big boxes are good. Will no doubt have to rethink it all when the lego creeps in!

Its worth a try as an idea but as I say ds makes no effort to sort his lego so.......... I could just chuck it all in a box

Bratley we've got that in the dtwins room, it's saved my sanity.

We've got the shelves to go in it and it's great for picture books and Duplo. We also have 2 of the tall ones in their bedroom for all the Playmobil(you'll be bound to have eventually) then 2 of the tall ones for craft stuff in the kitchen. The Trofast wall shelf with small plastic drawers is brilliant.

I'm an ex-teacher and a secret label craver too, had to restrain myself from putting theme labels on all the Playmobil drawers,my hands were itching . I saw some blackboard stuff you can cut up and stick on just had to walk away-who knows where it would have ended.
