When do you start cleaning their teeth?

Sorry for the stupid question, but I saw the Teeth Cleaning Tantrums thread and it suddenly occurred to me I have no idea about teeth cleaning!

My DS just has the first bit of just one tooth sticking out of his gums. I'm so proud he actually has one but it hadn't even crossed my mind that I might have to clean it When do we start cleaning it / them? Do you clean the little bit that's there or wait until it's more of a tooth?

Do you get special baby toothpaste? (Surely they must swallow it so adult stuff no good?)

TIA

I just wiped them with a flannel as they were coming through but by the time DD was one (she got her teeth quite late - had about 4 or 5 then) was brushing morning and night.

Yes - you get special baby toothpaste (and brushes) for under 2s.
