You first played outside your house?

Garden only for me until I was about 8 or 9, and then only when I was with older girls who my parent's knew from our street. I played in the garden before then and friends played with us.

Went shopping for your mum?

I would have been about 9 or 10, and would have been with my brother (1 year younger) or my best friend.

Went to school alone?

When I went to middle school (equivalent of year 5), so age 9. Again it was always with a friend from the same street as me.

Rode a bike?

Not sure. Had bikes from being little, but not sure how old I was when I rode a proper bike alone.

Went on public transport?

From being a baby. We had no car when I was born, and my mum doesn't drive at all, not even now.

Visited your local town/city with your mates?

I would have been about 13 - around the time I started secondary school.

played out - can't remember. Although can remember playing out on the back street (terraced houses) with my mum sat in a deck chair peeling potatoes so she could keep an eye on us. Maybe I was about 7 but had younger sisters who would have been allowed at a younger age.

Went shopping at about 9 to local corner shop which meant crossing one residential road. A pint of milk was 19p and I got to keep the change! (from a 20p).

Went to school alone at 11 (ie secondary) but my sister's were younger. Its just at 10 I wasn't allowed to look after the 6yo.

Never really rode a bike without my parents. Wasn't into it.

First went on public transport unaccompanied when I first went to local town with mates (ie too co-incided and I would have been about 12.

This was in the 70s/80s and lots of people had a freer rein than me.

Quite hard to remember - many many years ago! (50s-60s)

However:

You first played outside your house?

We lived on a council estate with wide streets and hardly any cars so pretty early I would think (maybe not as early as you though, hmb) Had a big garden anyway.

Went shopping for your mum?

Co-op in parade at end of street - apparently I came back with a divi thing aged about 4 because I'd learned the number from listening to my mum saying it.

Went to school alone?

Walked with older brother almost from day 1 - age 5

Rode a bike?

Didn't get one until about 9.

Went on public transport?

Alone or ever? If ever, then from birth pretty much (no car until I was about 5)

Visited your local town/city with your mates?

After starting sec. school

Oh, missed the alone on public transport bit - OK - don't know actually. Probably 9-ish.

Actually I have a really scary memory of trying to use a public phone for the first time - aged about 8 I think. We had no phone at home and neither did anyone else, I think I must have been tryng to ring my dad at work or something - you had to put your 4d in (huge Old Pennies) and then if they answered you pressed button A so the money fell in and you could talk, if they didn't you pressed button B and got your pennies back, but it all went wrong and I lost my pennies, I was mortified!

JoolsToo · 03/04/2005 23:04

Oh JanH - can we get together over a cup of tea!?

Those phone receivers weighed a ton!

JT, I am only about 6 months younger than you!(But a generation adrift, no grandchildren yet.)

Weirdly I can't remember our divi number now but I'm sure it was 6 digits, not 5.

Because around the time it was your birthday (was it October? Same day as someone else anyway - moo?) you mentioned your age. Or maybe it was on a "How Old Are You?" thread. Whichever, it's what I am going to be Very Soon
