What practical stuff does a 7/8 month old need? FIL wants to buy something practical for christmas.

DS will be 7 months at Christmas. I have already got a highchair, as we had an Ikea expedition a few weeks ago. Mum wants to buy him an 'entertainment centre' like the Leapfrog Learn n' groove thingamy.

What else might we need at this stage that we probably don't already have?

I've come up with a list by thinking back to dd at that age and what we needed/wanted. So...

• board books that you can read to ds, but he can chew without destroying, or crinkly fabric ones.

• winter all-in-one suit (jojomamanbebe do lovely ones)

• buggy snuggle for the pram/pushchair. Quite expensive, but brilliant. I used mine all last winter, and will do this year too - and for the next baby. No messing around with blankets getting caught up in the buggy wheels etc.

• or, if you spend a lot of time in the car rather than on foot, an activity toy for the car that hangs over the passenger seat.

• voucher for Clarks/other children's shoe shop for first pair of shoes. They are really expensive and your ds will be in them before you know it!

Not sure if these ideas are any use, but good luck coming up with a suggestion for FIL.

Stairgates would be a very good idea. Make sure you choose carefully - my in-laws bought one that has a stupid bar that you have to step over to get into the room, and I stub my toe on it everytime!!!

The stair gates that you fix to the walls so they awing either way are fab and no trip bar and are wider to walk thru so reduced thigh bruising!!

loads of great suggestions - second the bath toys and board books.

Ermmm .... can add

Travel cot - doubles as a play pen too (keeps toys tidy and contains crawling destruction machines).

toy phone/remote control (if you want to keep yours safe)

slipper socks with grippy bottoms - could not live without these at mo.

I got one of these as a present last year and it's fantastic! Great for car seat or in buggy, keeps them all snuggly and I've had so many people asking where I got it!

I had another idea - some Frugi trousers! DS wears cloth nappies, and his trousers are all too long in order to fit around the bum, but the Frugi stuff is a bit pricey for us to buy ourselves, so would make a nice pressie. Does that seem like a reasonable thing to ask for?
