kitbit · 27/08/2008 10:40

ds is coming up to 4, and really likes Charlie and Lola, anything to do with dinosaurs, pirates etc, is liking the Mungo books (Mungo and the spiders from Space etc) and the Captain Flinn and the Pirate Dinosaurs ones.

I'd like to get him some more stories, but am a bit stuck, what are other 4 year olds liking at the moment?!

thanks! x

my yr old likes these but i cannot stand them

also factual books about dogs and cats and tractors etc. my 5 yr always for some reason choose factual books out of the library. about how to care for your rabbit or dog or hamster - which we have none of!

Report
nailpolish · 27/08/2008 10:55

even if they are factual they still provide a chance to read together

ds (4) likes factual books at the moment... preferably on things that can kill you like sharks, spiders, and big cats. Or guides to comic superheroes.

But for story books I just take him to the library and he picks out the first he comes to and we try them out!

My ds loved The Gruffalo books and also the Dr Seus books (especially Green Eggs and Ham!)
When you've read them every night for a year they do lose their appeal though!!!

Ds is now nearly 7 but at 4 adored Richard Scarry, plus any Lynley Dodd (she does Hairy McLairy but there are lots of others as well - they are brilliant to read out loud).

dd at 4 liked anything fairy or princess related, from the simplest fairy book to Felicity Wishes via Secret Fairy series etc.

At 4.5 she started liking factual books more, 'did you know' type books.

At 4.7 she enjoys Alice in Wonderland, Wizard of Oz, etc - classic fairy tales like Thumbelina etc.

I am watching this thread with interest as ds is 3.5 and likes quite a few of the books mentioned. Do all of your 4 year olds still enjoy picture books or are they on to chapter books like the horrid henry ... I wasn't sure what sort of age to move on!

My DS is 4 and loves a book called Buster. It is about a dog who gets abandoned at christmas and then taken in and looked after by an old man. It has lovely drawings in it too.

The one that we have to have over and over again at the moment is The Gingerbread Man.

He also likes Horrid Henry, Monkey Puzzle and Guess How Much I love You(my favourite)

Ds1, 4.5, has just got into Dr Seus books and I find them really enjoyable to read. Got 4 more out of library today! Also the newer 'Cat in the Hat' learning library books which are not actually by Dr Seus but are rhyming books on subjects like space and the human body, informative but funny.
He does still like picture books a lot, and we haven't tried any long chapter books yet, mostly as I don't know which ones would appeal to him.

We were given a really good Usborne Rhyming story called "The Fangtastic Adventures of Dracula's Dentures' which is very funny, but I don't think they sell that series anymore. I keep meaning to look on ebay for more of them. It is separated into v. short chapters but the whole book is short enough to read in one go and it still has big pictures.

DD1 is just 4 and loves the Usbourne Phonics Readers books.

Hens Pens is her fave at the moment, and she can read a lot of the words herself.

Also loves hairy maclarey, charlie and lola, little princess books and We're going on a Bear hunt

"The Very Hungry Caterpillar" - fab

Also the Alfie series by Shirley Hughes. Very amusing in a slightly sarcastic and old fashioned way. Lovely 70s style illustrations.

Mioma - you're the first person I've ever come across on here who has mentioned Global Garden - ds absolutely loves it (calls it 'the trees book'). It's just fab...although one or two of the pull out bits have fallen off now after maybe a year of reading it fairly regularly! Ask him which fruits grow on trees or bushes and he's your man thanks to this!
