3 1/2 year old boy and still in pull ups at night, no where near dry - help?

Sorry didnt know where to post this thread as the potty training/nappies thread was aimed at younger kids.

My LO potty trained at 2 years old and got to grips with it brilliantly, no probs whats so ever.

18 months on and we are still no where near ready to take away night time pull ups, these are wet in the morning.

He used to still have milk at night so I suppose this was a factor. He now has it now and again and I try and give it to him at least one hour prior to bed, put him on the toilet before bed time but still his pull ups are wet.

When do you think he will be out of them - he is the only one of his friends who is in bedtime PJ Pants at 3 1/2 yrs

seems still young to me. Wouldn't worry about that.

I wouldn't have thought you would need to be thinking about night time dryness at all yet

and dont forget that other parents lie stretch the truth about when their children did something

I wouldn't worry about it - still very young.

My DS1 (will be 8 in Septmeber) is still wet every night - doctors wouldn't even consider seeing him to try and help until he was 7yrs old.

DS2 - dry during the day a few months before he turned 3, at 3 1/2yrs he just suddenly decided he didn't want to wear nappies.

All children are different, but 3 1/2 is still young.

ds is 4 in 3 weeks and still in nappies at night, also due to milk before bed. I don't worry about it tbh! Sorry that's not very helpful I will start to worry if he isn't out of them in the next year I think, as I'd like him out of them before he goes to school, but even then it wouldn't be the end of the world. I'm sure there are children alot older still in night nappies!

Not a problem at all. My 4 yr old DD is still in nappies at night and her 2 yr old sister has been dry night and day for months, I spoke to the HV about it and she said there is actually a hormone they need in their bodies that enables the body to hold urine for longer and wake them when they need to go at night. If the hormone isn't being produced yet then it ain't going to happen. This may all be hokum but it set my mind at ease.

don;t fret, he is still normal and ok

with mine, (I have 5 children) they were all easy and about 2yrs old being dry during the day, and then differing ages for the night.

DD1 was 2.2yrs dry, 3yrs night time
DD2 2.2yrs dry. 2.2yrs dry at night
DD3, 2.6yr dry, 4.6ys dry at night
DS1, 2.6yrs dry. 6.6yr night dry
DS2 2yr on the dot dry day time, now 6.1yrs and still not dry at night, but we have had weeks where he has been.

no medical professional will be worried until the are over 7yrs old.

HTH

you'd be amazed if you knew just how many children start school and still wear pull-ups at night

You have done well with day dyness
I am reliably informed that night dryness cannot be trained

Just wait for the times when his sleep pants aren't wet and go from there

Please don;t worry, I really do think it all happens at different times

Ds1 was dry at night as soon as he was potty trained (although I didn't potty train him until he was nearly 3) but ds2 is nowhere near being dry at night - I think he stores it all up and wees all night.

I really wouldn't worry about it. I left ds1 in pull ups for months after he was dry at night "just in case". Every child is different with bladder control. He'll get there in the end. I agree that lots of parents lie about how their children's progress - whether it's sleeping through, potty training, reading or riding a bike.

Just leave it for now. Being dry in the day is no indication that they are ready to be dry at night - and they can't be dry through the night until they are physically ready (it can be a hormonal thing). If he is the only one of your friends' kids not dry at night then you have an unusual bunch of friends - 20% of 5 year olds are still wetting at night, 12% of 6 year olds, 5% of 10 year olds - it's incredibly common.

Just keep him in the pull-ups and leave it til he starts having dry ones - he will get there in the end.

My ds1 was not dry til nearly 8 (he was referred to an eneuresis clinic, had a night alarm...the lot) and I am currently washing my almost 7 year old sheets after yet another night-time accident (even though he has been out of nappies at night since 5, he still has a lot of accidents). It really isn't anything to worry about

My ds (4.5) is getting there - maybe 4 dry pull-ups in the morning each week, but neither of us are in any great hurry. Tried him without a few weeks ago and it wasn't a huge success. He got upset waking in a wet bed. We're leaving it a bit longer. You really have nothing to worry about. I remember reading somewhere that approx 35% of boys are dry at night by 3, and that the majority get it sometime between 4 and 5. Medical bods are rarely concerned until over a child is over 7.

3.5?! Would be very early for a boy.

I haven't even bothered looking with DS2 and he's nearly 4.

DS1 was 6ish before he reliably slept through dry.

My DD is 4.10 and still in pulll-ups. But then her dad was still wet when he was 12! It's genetic - something to do with a hormone or something. I'm hoping to be free of pull-ups before she's 12 but any pressure I put on her won't help. She's had a few nights dry, but not many. But she'll get there in the end...

As everybody else says this is quite normal, I hope! We have DS1, 6 in October, and DD1, 4 last March, plus two younger ones, all in nappies at night. I too have been told about the hormone and my MIL, who was a children's nurse at Great Ormond Street, says this is very common indeed.

It's normal for a 3 year old to not be dry at night in fact a lot of 5 yrear olds are not dry at night.

Most supermarkets sell 'nappy pants' to fit teens. As everyone else has said its perfectly normal. Its not a conscious thing and you can't teach them to be dry at night - as someone else said its largely hormonal. They simply will when they're ready. I see no point at all in rushing them out of pull-ups and dealing with wet sheets and upset kids all the time. Sleep overs concern me a little but as ds1 is just coming up for 4 we've got ages to go before we need to worry about that...

He may well still be in his pj pants but I bet most of his friends mums are washing sheets 3, 4, 5 times a week

Romy7 · 19/08/2008 21:29

the doc will laugh you out of the surgery if you ask for advice before they are 7!!
perfectly normal!
dd2 was dry day and night at 2, but dd1 was 8 before she was able to come out of pull-ups at night. ds1 is 6 and we are using a bedwetting alarm as he was soaking through pull-ups onto sheets etc without waking.
your ds is doing just fine.
