Temperature of 105 - dangerous?

Hello. Some of you may have seen my other thread, but I will start from the beguinning anyway.

Thursday...DD miserable, put it down to teething at first. Noticed she was a bit warm when I put her to bed, but not hot so just opened window and left her in her nappy. 10.30pm ish, she wakes for a feed, Boiling hot (104) so I gave calpol and she had a bottle (90% breastfed, has the odd bottle to settle her). So after the bottle is all gone, she shoots the entire feed accross the room. We brought her downstairs, did various things to bring down temp while we phoned NHS direct, who were no help at all. She screamed and scream till eventually at about 2am we took her to A+E as her temp still hadnt gone down and she was obviously in pain.

Hospital said she had a tonsillitis, and had white pussy spots on the throat etc gave her paracetamol and nerofen and sent her home. In and out within 20mins (But typically she acted fine in hospital and the cold car journey temperarily bought her temp down a bit).

Friday - still cried all day, still very hot etc so took to Docs at 6pm. Doctor said that if the hospital discharged her, she is probably fine and no need for antibiotics and also said there were no spots - which is the opposite to what hospital said.

Today - still cried most of the day. Late afternoon wasn't too bad, had a nice long bath with me and went to sleep well (hadnt slept much the last few days). Just been up to her about 20mins ago and she was boiling again. Took temp and its 105, which is the highest its ever been. But I know its generally higher when sleeping anyway, but surely not this high? Have given 4mls calpol and a breastfeed and is back in cot asleep.

Should I be worried her temperature is soo high? I am sure I read before on here that anything above 105 was dangerous?

I think at the very least I would phone NHS Direct. 105 sounds very high to me - any idea what that is in Centigrade? I think it is over 40 which would worry me.

I suspect they will tell you to take her to the out of hours doctors. If she really has tonsillitis she needs antibiotics.

105 is higher than anything I have ever come across (and ds2 used to run high temperatures at the drop of a hat).

When did you give the last dose of calpol? It can take 45 minutes or so to work. Also, is she old enough for ibuprofen as you can give that at the same time as calpol.

Not sure NHS direct or your GP are going to say anything different to you given the history you relate. (Though if it were me, I would be ringing them anyway).

Just googled it and 105F is 40.56C - DS2 had a temperature that high once and it was very worrying although he was OK - he had a virus so no treatment except alternating the neurofen and the paracetamol.

Can you see any spots?

You need to take her to hospital if her temp is that high.

Really, you do.

That is a dangerous temperature.

I'd go to a different A&E if there is another one in town.

A child with that high a temp shouldn't be fobbed off.

Yes she has been having ibuprofen too. Poor girl has had loads of both the last few days. She should be able to have some more ibuprofen when she next wakes though, but had calpol at about 9.30

105 is 40.5 c which is pretty high. My dd2 had a temp of 40.1 the other week; her skin was literally burning. I heard nurofen was better at bringing down a temperature. We also used a tepid flannel on her forehead, although she didn't like it much.

Took her to the docs the following day, and she was as right as rain; doc put it down to a virus.

I am surprised A&E did't give her ab's for her infected tonsils.

I don't want to contradict Expat but I would leave it a while then and wait to see if the calpol does anything.

That's about 40oC? I'm not an expert but I would want to get temp down from 40 as soon as I could - remove clothing and cool bath?

The last time my DD had a temp of 40 she had a bacterial infection - in her ears. Teething never gets above 38, and colds never more than 39 - that's just my own experience.

How are you measuring temp? Do you have a digital ear thermometer? It's really warm tonight so strip her down to least clothing possible for sleeping and no covers?

Monitor temperature frequently - do you have any infant neurofen? How old is she?

Both mine get v high temps (40/41) when they are ill. You need to be very careful and watch out for febrile convulsions at that temperature - that's the biggest concern really. Some children do have a tendency to temps like that but also the fact that it's gone on for a few days now is cause for concern.

Yes she has also had a rash, but I think it is just from the heat, the doc at a+e saw it and said it was fine.

There is another hospital I can go to, but I dont think it has a childrens a+e like this one did...should I go now or give the calpol a chance to work and see if it does the trick.

She is just waking now so will give the nerofen

They don't recommend too cool a bath, as apparently this makes the lo's shiver and the body warms up as a defence mechanism - this is what GP told me a few weeks ago.

Agree re no clothing on her. And just wipe her a bit with a flannel dipped in tepid water. If she seems moreorless the person you know her to be, I would wait to see what the calpol does, but if she seems unlike herself in any way, I think I would be tempted to go back to the hospital (or to the other one). Why do these things always happen on Saturday nights when you know A&E will be full of drunks?

get them to check her ears, if they haven't already............and yes, I would take her in at 7 months if temperature is persisting.
