how often is it the mum who has to take the time off?

Just wondered. Sorry if its been done to death before

francesrivis Tue 22-Jul-08 19:40:57

My DP is self employed so quite flexible - therefore it's usually him who looks after DD if she's ill (he's great at it too - much better than I would be cooped up at home with a poorly 2 year old!). It's a godsend for me as my job is quite pressured at the moment and having to take time off unexpectedly would cause all kinds of problems.

maidamess Tue 22-Jul-08 19:42:03

I make sure its 50/50!

MmeBovary Tue 22-Jul-08 19:42:17

Pretty much always me! Though if dd has been ill for a few days DH will take a turn. I'm lucky in that I can generally wangle working from home for a couple of days.

unfitmother Tue 22-Jul-08 19:42:31

It's DH in our house. smile

unknownrebelbang Tue 22-Jul-08 19:45:12

Depends what shift DH is on. If he's off, then he deals with it. If not, more often than not, I have to leave work because I work flexitime, and the nature of our jobs means it's easier for me to escape than DH.

RubySlippers Tue 22-Jul-08 19:46:16

it depends on who is closest/doesn't have a meeting etc they can't get out of

we have split it fairly evenly i think

beansprout Tue 22-Jul-08 19:52:37

Dh will go if he can but the bottom line is that he runs his organisation so tends to be pretty tied up most of the time. My job is a bit more chilled and it is often easier for me to leave.

NigellaTheOriginal Tue 22-Jul-08 19:56:54

I've never had to. I have disgustingly healthy children but i think if they did need collecting it would be me that does it.

Morloth Tue 22-Jul-08 20:36:41

Usually 50/50 though if one of us has something we HAVE to be at then it is the other parent.

Cicatrice Tue 22-Jul-08 20:38:24

Usually me so far, but its early days. Easier for DH to take the next day off if the LO is still sick though.

janeite Tue 22-Jul-08 20:40:22

It's usually dp, as he works part time and can also be a bit more flexible with his timetable (college) than I can (secondary school).

WideWebWitch Tue 22-Jul-08 20:41:16

It's always dh for us as I work 2 hours away and he can be there witihn half an hour. When I worked nearer it was sometimes me, depended on what meetings etc I had and how important.

Hulababy Tue 22-Jul-08 20:43:02

If one of my work days - DH would be the one to collect her. He works about 10 minutes drive from school; I work over an hour away.

We do have friend's numbers as back up in case DH cannot get away (unlikely) though.
If DD is ill in the monring and can't go in then it tends to be mainly me who takes time off, but DH will do too where possible.

Nappyzoneneedsanewname Tue 22-Jul-08 20:43:03

Its always me - dh teaches so a bit tricky as his lessos are planned whereas i can kinda walk off the job and hope/ pray it gets covered which it generally is...

pointydog Tue 22-Jul-08 20:58:32

Nearly always dh.

Janos Tue 22-Jul-08 21:00:53

Yes, it was with me, even when I was still with XP.

But now it's more even, although luckily DS is very rarely ill.

If it's a Monday then dh. If a Tuesday or Thursday, we tend to do half a day each where possible.

rookiemater Tue 22-Jul-08 21:05:29

Fingers crossed, has only happened once and then it was the CM rather than DS.

That time it was me, but it would really depend on what meetings each person had on and how busy their day was. In reality more likely to be me, as DH is a contractor so we wouldn't want to lose the money whereas I could use holiday or accrued time.

ChippyMinton Tue 22-Jul-08 21:05:43

Happened once, I collected because a) school range me and b) it meant leaving work only an hour before my usual time.
DH's work is nearer, so in an emergency he'd get there faster than I could. Either of us could work from home for the rest of the day if necessary.

mumtoone Tue 22-Jul-08 21:13:52

We share taking time off to look after sick children 50/50.

Fizzylemonade Tue 22-Jul-08 21:13:54

It was always me as I had a much less demanding job and it was much easier to get away.

However, when DS1 had chicken pox I did 2 days and DH did 1 day (I worked 3 days a week) now I am sahm so it is always me grin

oi Tue 22-Jul-08 21:16:23

dh generally does it most of the week. I'd do it on a Friday. He'd probably cover the other days unless he was horrendously busy in which case, I'd step in.

But we're flexible, if one of us has an urgent meeting or is v busy, then the other one covers.

Acinonyx Tue 22-Jul-08 22:46:49

Me - but I've only had to do it once.
