IME, nothing much makes a real difference, but we convinced ourselves that Ashton & Parsons powders make a bit of a difference. And calpol of course.

Third the Ashton & Parsons powders, they can halt a scream-a-thon. Temporarily, at least.

I have some bonjela but don't like to use it in case DS wants feeding, as it is numbing I think it can make it difficult.
