Weaning a baby with allergies?!

Evening 😊

My son is coming up for 6 months and is definitely ready for weaning (no tongue thrust, sitting up, putting things to his mouth etc)

However, he is allergic to eggs and quite badly I would say. I’ve not had this confirmed yet because my health visitor didn’t believe me at first and I’m still waiting for an appointment with the allergist. He is ebf and I have completely cut eggs out his diet and he’s been so much better. But, I’ve been told to be very careful with weaning as a baby with allergies is likely to have either more allergies, more severe reactions or both when it comes to weaning as they are eating bigger quantities and not just the proteins in my milk. I’m very nervous about it and wondered if anybody had any advice?

Thank you Flowers

Introduce potential allergens one at a time and if, after a few days, your son has no symptoms, the next new food can be introduced. Once he’s started eating them, continue to include them regularly in his diet.
Start small, because the smaller the quantity served, the less severe an allergic reaction may be. The best time to introduce an allergen for the first time would be when you have the opportunity to watch him relatively closely for two hours after eating. Also, keep a food diary.

@EmmieCHi, I feel for you as my 18 month old has multiple allergies and weaning last summer was a nightmare for us (my little one was high risk during to early onset severe eczema).

I hope once you start weaning that you can enjoy it and that your little one hasn’t got any other allergies.

I just wanted to say that I am following some really great pages on Instagram which I wish I’d found this time last year as they really are fab with some great posts on weaning an allergy baby.
@childrensdietitian (Lucy Upton),
@sr_nutrition,
@ tinytotsnutrition,
@theallergydietitian.

Also Allergy UK has good information.

If you do find multiple allergies then definitely a good dietitian is essential to ensure little one gets all they need from their diet. Which for us meant a private dietitian as the NHS set up meant we didn’t get the support we needed.

And it helps to remember that small babies are not likely to have a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) on first exposure to a food as their immune systems are generally not developed enough to at that age (although I know it can happen, it is unlikely). It is still scary when introducing allergens and goes without saying to avoid egg until you see the allergist ( hopefully soon!).

Hope you’re seen soon!

You need to make an appointment with the GP and ask them to refer to do paediatric dietitian.

What do you mean he is badly allergic to eggs? What kind of reaction does he have? Is it through bm?

Allergies can develop on the first (very rare), third or the thousandth exposure to new food so it’s not so simple as to say once they’ve had a new food you know they are not allergic to it.

Use the food ladders easily found online for potential allergens, for eg dairy introduction ladder

He gets mucous in his nappies, vomiting, rashes/really sore looking eczema. Very unsettled because of stomach pain. Took a while trying to work out what it was so he has been exposed to them quite a few times. I was also told to try half an egg once to be sure it was them and it was.

I don’t have any other photos. This was after I was told to eat half a boiled egg Sad
