Viral induced wheeze

Hi everyone,

My 7yo was taken to hospital on Saturday as he had a cough for few days and went rapidly downhill, struggling to breathe and breathing very very fast, and he was diagnosed with a severe viral induced wheeze. Hospital gave him burst therapy of salbutamol (excuse spelling??!) and we had to stay in overnight as it was taking a while to improve. His oxygen levels were a little on the low side but they discharged us Sunday morning and said his chest is clear now and sent us home with inhaler to take every 4 hours until he's better and told to see a GP today. They told me he's fine to go to school today but I kept him off, he's still coughing and I'm concerned it's going to happen again, it's causing me so much worry. My question is, am I being over cautious keeping him off this week until cough clears? Should I let him go back to school? I just worry about all the activity and running around and if it would make him have another attack. I'm waiting for Gp to call back to give us an app today. Thanks in advance, x

My son went through an awful year of this when he was about 18 months old. It’s horrible, so sympathy to you. As long as he was feeling well enough, I’d let him go back to school. We had all sorts of relapses for no obvious reason on and off for months, but none of it seemed to be related to him going back to nursery. As long as he wasn’t struggling to breathe and felt well in himself (even with an awful cough), we sent him in.

Hi @Leo090813

My DS has ongoing VIW and I so feel your pain! I hope you're ok, it's horrible seeing your child struggling to breathe. Hopefully you've seen a doctor by now for a bit of reassurance. If he seems fine in himself and the doctor is happy with him going to school he should be ok. School never seemed to make my son worse - I just make sure they know what's going on so they don't send him home for a covid test because of him coughing!! I'm happy to answer any questions if you have any more - I've had a lot of experience with this (unfortunately!). Lots of hugs to you both xx
