10 month old not playing with toys?

I have a 10 month old who was born at the beginning of lockdown. She's developing brilliantly - almost walking, eating well three times a day along with milk and sleeping well too and babbling away.
As she is our first, I don't really know what she should be doing in terms of playing? She seems to be quite happy pottering around the house and enjoys going for walks outside. She doesn't seem to really play with any toys - tends to throw them all and never really seems interested. I'd hoped that she would be able to sit and play with just one toy by now but she tends to just destroy all her toys within minutes or pull all her books down from a shelf.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I have 2 ds and I think that's not unusual 10mo behaviour. My ds2 18mo is interested in whatever his older brother 4yo is playing with and even then still throws things around. He does love a good pretend phone though! At that age mine liked interative games like peek a boo and tickles, cuddles etc. Try bubbles and maybe instruments she can bang on.

Also model how to play with toys so she can have a good idea of what to do or if she knows then show her it can be fun. Some kids never really enjoy toys till they are pre school age. I wouldn't worry of shes developing otherwise well. I remember ds1 being like this and I'd get really wound up he wasn't excited about his new toys, I know have to distract him from toy aisles l. Sounds about right to me - I know that doesn’t sound like playing but she is entertaining herself as such and exploring. What kind of toys? Do you play with her? She might show a bit more interest if you engage with the toys together.

Sounds about right to me. DS1 only really started to play properly closer to 18months. Before that it was just chucking things around. It still is sometimes at 2.5

DS2 is playing earlier at 11 months but he’s copied his brother

My DC1 was like this - very active, more interested in doing things than playing with things. Even as he got older it didn't really change - he was never into lego etc.

Throws abs pulls things - that IS playing. Totally normal. My toddlers didn't really play until over a year. Before that it was all throwing/eating or totally ignoring

Thanks for this thread op. I'm in the same boat and this is all very reassuring!

I have an almost 10 month old and he seems to love mainly emptying kitchen cuboards and slapping the tv.

Thank you all so much, you've been so reassuring.
I can't help but worry that she's missing out on things because of lockdown.
I sit with her and demonstrate her toys - stacking cups and rings, blocks, puzzles, things to roll on the floor but she has attention for about 2 seconds and then she's gone. Tends to just want to move and explore which is exhausting when you cannot go anywhere and with the weather too.

Mine pulls stuff around and likes things that aren’t toys. But has started ‘playing’ a little.

Toys that he likes:
pull along dog
Chunky wooden puzzle
Stacking cups
Maracas
Rubber duck type bath toys - we don’t use in bath

I also feel very guilty - I saw a post on here where someone has asked for activities for their 10 month and and people have suggested making sand with Cheerios and painting in a zip lock bag. I just know it wouldn't go down well. I've tried painting but she doesn't seem interested at all yet.

Don't feel guilty OP. Some kids like craft but it sounds like yours is more into physical activity - that's ok! Take your lead from her. They're all different. I think you're doing a great job Smile

My lo is 2 and I didn't do any of that craft stuff op, don't feel pressured, if you want to do it great but if not that's not the end of the world.

I echo everyone else I don't think my lo played with toys until about 13 months ish

My almost 11 month old is the same. He has a mountain of toys, a ball pit etc and he isn’t interested unless I’m sat down playing with them and him - have you tried this?

If I’m not doing that then he’s climbing the furniture, trying to grab the cat, or eat the remote controls.
