2yo won’t wear sleeping bag or use duvet

Hello

My almost 2 yo refuses to wear a sleeping bag and won’t use the duvet. We put the duvet at night before he goes to bed but he just kicks it off. He wears a vest and cotton pyjamas. We also have one set of merino wool pyjamas which he also wears.

We turn the heating off at night because the pipes are so bloody loud in our house. Also, even with the heating off, the room temp is 21 degrees but he must still get a bit chilly? He woke up in the middle of the night and I think this is why.

Any ideas on what I can do to keep him warm?

At 21⁰C they arent going to be cold overnight without a duvet! My heating isn't even at that during the day! Maybe he kicks the covers off as he's too hot

Mine refused sleeping bags once they were walking.

Have you tried putting the duvet on once he is asleep?

Or traditional sheets and blankets tucked in?

If he is cold (although if the room is at 21 degrees, I would have thought that unlikley), put a thin jumper on over his pj's.

Mine is the same at 2.5. He was in with me last night and kicked my duvet off him while still asleep. It's there if he wants it, and he's old enough to get under it if he's cold.

That said 21 degrees is t shirt weather - he doesn't need a duvet if it's so warm overnight!

I'd be roasting overnight at 21 degrees but if your genuinely think he's waking with the cold what about a fleece onesie? You can still get them with feet for 2-3 years olds?

You shouldn't use a bag with sleeves for sleeping in as that can cause overheating.

Just leave a smaller thin fleece blanket on his bed so he can pull it over himself/you can pull up if he wakes.

Wow how do you get the house to 21 degrees at night without having the heating on? That’s amazing.

If you think he’s cold, fleece PJs or padded PJs (a few places sell them) would work. But I’d say it’s unlikely he’s too cold with the room at 21 degrees.

Mine didn't really get the point of covers until they were about 8, and even then it was because it was properly chilly in their bedrooms - 21 is plenty warm enough!

My 2yo won't either and 21 is what we set his bedroom heater to to keep him warm. He just wears normal pyjamas.

Thanks guys. It says 21 degrees on the monitor but not sure how accurate it is. Probably isn’t too far off tbh. I only think he gets cold because his hands and feet are freezing cold when he wakes but his body is warm Confused

@Seeline I’ve tried doing this but he just kicks it off again 😂. I tried tucked in sheets once and he got so annoyed 😬 he likes to shuffle around his bed a lot at night.

@FrankiesKnuckle this is the one we have and he hates it. He just asks to take it off!

@minipie our house was renovated a few years ago and we got new double glazing and insulated the floors/roof.

Thank you all for the suggestions! I will try a thin jumper tonight and maybe some socks to see if this makes a difference (he’ll no doubt pull the socks off). I think I’m basing this a lot on how I feel, I get cold very easily and am assuming it must be the same for him but perhaps not! X

My 2.5 year old usually kicks off the duvet completely too but his room is shouting at 18 degrees at night sometimes falls to 17.. He never seems to be cold his feet and hands might be but body isn't, I just go in and put the blanket back up over him when I go to bed.. Often is off again before I get out of the room 🙈

My 9 yr old sleeps in a pair of shorts, with a thin blanket sometimes covering part of him.
The house starts at 18 and, like you, we dont have it back on til just before we get up in the morning.
Dont stress about it. Put him in some pyjamas, offer him a thin duvet or blanket (if he's too hot a thick one isnt going to get used!), and leave him to it.

Does he sleep better on the nights he wears the merino pyjamas? If not then I would guess it’s not cold waking him up.

How often is he waking? If it was just the once then leave as is?

I’ve only recently started using a duvet with my LO and I just pop back in once she’s asleep and before we go to bed an cover her up. She usually stays like that all night then x

Sounds like my in laws house. I barely sleep there it's so hot. Have you tried something thinner like a quilt or blanket if a duvet is too warm?

You can get fleecey sleepsuits - sorry it's been a while since mine were little but Jojo Maman might be a good place to start. Also you can get duvet clips which keep the duvet in place.

He must be roasting, I would be!!!

Cold hands and feet is very normal and doesn't mean they're too cold. It's their body. DS is 3 and a half now and only just getting to like snuggling under the duvet. Apart from last night when he ended up in with me after a nightmare and kicked the duvet off so I had all of it.

Thank you all for the replies! I must have the worst circulation ever to feel chilly at 21 degrees. Hopefully DS has far better circulation than me! I’ll try him with a thin jumper tonight but if he hates it I’ll go back to vest and pjs and switch the heating off a bit earlier (I put it on 17 at night but I don’t think it goes down that low).

Couldn’t you turn the radiator down in his room and keep the door shut, what did you do about SIDS when he was younger?

Report
5amcrew · 08/01/2021 18:44

When he was younger (and more compliant) he would always wear a 1 tog sleeping bag and a set of cotton PJs, or cotton sleep suit. He never seemed to mind the sleeping bag until recently. In the summer when it was ridiculously hot he slept in a nappy and we had a fan circulating around his room and made sure he had a water cup in his cot. He’s always got water to hand in his room!

Tbh we only really put the heating on over the past few weeks as it’s been so cold outside and especially at night. I think our house retains heat quite well which is lucky but I always seem quite cold and wear a hoodie over my pjs! I’m probably projecting my coldness onto him and he’s most likely right as rain 😅

Gro to sleep zip on duvet Grin

Report
Coriandersucks · 08/01/2021 21:23

I was just about to say the gro to sleep zip on duvets too! They were a miracle when our 2 year old outgrew his bag but couldn’t figure out a duvet. I couldn’t bring myself to zip both sides fully though as I worried he would get trapped underneath and they’re not cheap but it was worth every penny for ensuring he was covered at night.

Report
SnowmanDrinkingSnowballs · 08/01/2021 21:32

I wouldn’t zip him into anything, unless he is waking up because he is cold.
