Am interested to know everyones hits and misses with toys for Christmas this year.

I'll start - almost 3 year old boy. His birthday is coming up soon so would be great to find some new ideas of what to get him.

Hit - Early Learning Centre Build It Deluxe Set. Priced at £25-£30. Various knuts/bolts/connecting parts and wheels. Your child can make a variety of things with this toy, so far it has been a robot, garbage truck and the favourite so far, a wheelbarrow. For the price I feel this will get alot of play out of it.

Miss - Buckaroo game! Finding it very hard to make the horse buck which of course is what the game is about.


Bonus if you can also let me know any expensive toys (£40+) that you feel your child plays with alot and is worth the money. So far the majority of toys I have tried around this price point don't do much and then I feel they are not very good value for money unfortunately.

I think brio train set is good at this age. Can buy small, and if they like add to it over time. I think all the wooden sets are compatible together ie brio, IKEA, bigjigs. So the brand doesn’t matter

Mine is 3 in Feb. He is really into dressing up and costumes, his favourite present was a costume. Aside from that his two best presents were a set of two torches (indestructible ones from Amazon!) and some toddler roller skates. He adores the torches!!

Not bought my little one costumes yet but that is a fab idea!!

Mine are 4 but last year big hits were hobby horses, dogs on leads (solid leads so the dog 'walks' in front) and their scooters

Oh actually probably best value for money was a paw patrol look out tower that I picked up second hand for £10 (think they're about £40 new, it's the small one), it's is played with every day without fail.

The little fire station set from Aldi went down well here, as well as a Wobbel board. My friends little boy at 3 1/2 loves the Tonies box.

Wooden train set my boys love got added to at Xmas. Also tea set was one of my kids faves toy dogs are always hungry

Hit with four year old has been battery controlled Thomas on a track. He likes to put obstacles in front and then rescue Thomas. I am wondering how long Thomas will survive!

He’s also obsessed with some cheap mini PJ Masks cars that we got as stocking fillers.

Hit for one year old has been xylophone that she can bash.

My DS is 3, he got the leapfrog ice cream cart for his birthday a few months back. It gets played with constantly. He also loves dress up costumes, toy keyboard and his playdoh. Also loves his Lego duplo sets!
Misses have been a toy kitchen, he just isn’t that interested yet, he plays with it a bit but it’s never his go too.

Massive hit with ds (nearly 3) is a toy chainsaw. Mama’s a massive fan of wielding a chainsaw so now he can copy!

Both DTs love duplo, it’s one of the few things they’ll sit and play together without fighting! for hours, and it really encourages their imaginary play. I bought a job lot off of eBay for about £100, and it’s covered everything they’re in to.

Misses have been for mine a dog on a lead that walks (maybe because we have dogs?) and the world’s supply of toot toot toys.

My sister bought my DS (15 months) a Henry Hoover and Henry cleaning trolley. He hasn’t put it down since Christmas Day except to eat, sleep and bathe! We were surprised as didn’t think children were at the stage for imaginative play until at least 2+.

We got him lots of wooden toys/puzzles from the Lidl toy event but regretting the decision now. We’ve just ordered him a play sink with some of his Christmas money to go in his IKEA table; hopefully this will go down as well as the Henry Hoover bits!

Dd3 (3 in August) loves her Hubelino she got for Christmas as do siblings older and younger. Ker Plunk was a hit too. Skipping rope and Jigsaws She has always been a tricky one to buy for, loves being outdoors. Scooters and bikes are always a hit. New scooter has not been put down.

The big ticket items - a tonies box and micro scooter. Both massive hits thankfully.

Smaller items, books, happyland add ons, dress ups to accompany fave books (smartest giant in town etc)

Garage for his numerous cars

Pretend food and play kitchen. He has fruit and veg etc, but the cakes and ice cream are his favourite

Puzzles, Orchard Games and a magnetic fishing game

His balance bike

All these items get played with daily or multiple times a week. Anything that’s open ended and encourages imaginative play is going to have the most longevity.

Oh and DUPLO trains and also the Disney Cars DUPLO. He’s not really into building with the blocks though, or stacking his wooden blocks.

Sorry, keep thinking of more. He also loves the projector torches. He’s got Space and Dinosaur ones, and spends ages playing in a darkened room with them.

Giant plastic monstrosity of Paw Patrol Lookout with vehicles was the massive hit this Christmas. He hasn’t even finished opening his Christmas presents yet as he’s so absorbed in playing with that.

Play Doh food play sets are also a hit. Again, he loves the ice cream version and judging by the comments above, he’s not the only 3 yr old who loves pretend ice cream in various forms!

Outdoor sandpit is very popular in all weathers. It helped us survive lockdown and he was out playing in it today too, despite the cold weather.

Misses: Beautiful collection of wooden rainbows, stackers and animals Visiting kids love them, just not DS1. Hoping DS2 will enjoy them more when he’s older!

Magnetic tiles have been a huge hit here too, we got them 2 years ago when DC were 2 and 3 and they are still played with regularly. Duplo has also been very long lived, and again is still played with regularly by both.
