Help - how do I feed my baby chicken?!

I’m planning to poach some skinless, boneless chicken breasts for DS (8 months). Since starting weaning he’s had a mix of purées and finger food (toast, bits of veg). What is the best way to give him chicken - should meat be puréed or just cut into strips? He’s not got many teeth yet so I’m concerned about him choking - but on the other hand he has had bits of toast and veg already Confused

Oh :o I thought you were talking about a chick and wondered why this was in parenting!

I found chicken breast a bit dry for them at that age, so best added to a puree. Leg meat torn into strips was more accessible (and flavoursome) for them as finger food. I just cooked chicken in normal ways - I would have thought poached chicken would be extremely bland?

We did blw, I think very thin strips and then halved should be fine xx

Mine had it cut into large chunks as part of a meal so a curry etc. They tended to suck on it. Don’t worry about teeth, 2 of mine had no teeth until gone 12 months and managed just fine!

Well this was much more disappointing than I thought

Under 1 we puréed meals so he'd have had chicken in that form.

Over 1 we just cut it up really small.

Just give them big chunks or strips to gnaw and suck on. Bigger is better.

Cut it into chunky strips so he can grab it with his whole hand, small pieces are no good as they don't have a good enough pincer grip.

I was hoping for some fluffy chick pics! Any chicken owners care to indulge me?

Heh I also wondered whether you had meant feeding your baby chicken, or feeding a chick. 😆🐣🐤🐥

I would just cut it into very small bits - if he can cope with toast and veg then he can cope with small pieces of chicken.

Oh I meant to cut it into small bits if you’re serving it mixed in with mash or crushed veg.

Pulled (shredded) chicken in a slow cooker?

Have you ever let your baby chomp down on your finger whilst teething?

Those gum plates are very hard. He can manage to eat strips of chicken quite easily.

Yes, this. There's no need to overly soften it or to cut it up small. Larger is actually both safer (they'll only suck or gum off what they can handle) and easier for the baby (can be held in whole fist grip). And the texture will be much more interesting for them.

I just gave mine the whole drumstick, he loved it. I did both baby led weaning and puréed stuff.

But giving him a whole drumstick, helped his grip and hand eye coordination, and now he is 7 and LOVES chicken on the bone. Nando's, chicken wings, roast chicken etc, loves it all.

Cook the meat as you are for yourself, take two forks and shred the chicken (works for most meats that are slow cooked too. My that age my kids ate the same as us

Thanks everyone - oops it was a misleading title sorry! Grin I’m just so frightened that it’ll get stuck in his throat?! But equally I’m scared he’s not getting enough iron by not having had milk yet...

I thought you had six months old. Dunno how I saw that...

Anyway, I think he should be okay with a strip. Pulled off would be safer than cut, I think. That’s what I would do, anyway.
