Any stories of 1st 2nd percentile kids who turned out just fine?

Hi all,

My daughter is 20months old, developmentally delayed and she weighs just over 8kg and wears 6-9month clothing.

She's under the care of. Developmental paediatrician and SALT, who have both mentioned Autism.

She's always been small, had a feeding tube when she was 4mo for 'failure to thrive' (but mostly due to her bottle aversion!) we overcame her bottle aversion and she was also diagnosed with CMPA which she was clear of by 13months old.

I feel like for the whole of her life so far I've been worrying about her, I've started to relax and I don't weigh her as much now, and we have been concentrating on her speech development.

However, we have never had bloods taken or any further investigations done. I'm happy to leave it be if she's just small, but could there be something underlying?
Bloods for genetic testing have been mentioned but that was only when I went to get her eyes tested.

There's a 10.5 month age gap between her and her older brother and he was born 8lbs 2 and is 70th percentile. I know they're all different....

Any advice from parents who've had a little pocket rocket and how they are now would be great :)

Hiya! My dd was 5lb 6oz at birth. She was titchy for ages! She was still wearing 12month clothes aged 2. Now aged 3 totally caught up and wears aged 3-4 clothes. Ask your health visitor if your worried? It's horrible worrying when they're so little

Mine was -4th percentile at 3lb 12

He's 8 now, stuffing his face next to me wearing size 8-9 jarmies

Mine was off the bottom of the charts for ages. She’s 4 and on about the 25th centile now.

My eldest was on the 0.4 centile when she was born! She's now 7 and petite, but not exceptionally so. She's small but strong and healthy and never gets ill.

Dd was 5lb 11 oz at birth and hovered along the 2nd centile for ages. By 4 she was on the 25th centile. She is now 20 years old, 5'6" and eats more then DH and I do together.

Aw! This made me smile! Sounds like I've just got to wait a few years - hopefully! :) Then I'm sure I'll have something else to worry about!

Hi OP, I know how worried you must be as this sounds very similar to my son. He was born a very healthy weight on the 25th centile but is now 3 years old on the 2nd centile and it’s heartbreaking. He wears 12-18 months clothes but he is so tall so we now struggle to dress him as what fits his length doesn’t fit his waist.
He has ASD & GDD. I would push for the bloods personally to rule anything out that way. My son also has an MRI booked.

My daughter was 0.2 percentile for a long time. She was born early along with her twin brother but he caught up and is relatively regular sized, my dd is a absolutely tiny. She had an NG tube too. She is a bit speech delayed but not as much as her much larger brother, so it doesn't necessarily correlate. I'm not overly concerned. She has small hands and feet so in her case I think she is just a small person!

I have a 1st centile 7yo DD. She's absolutely fine. Still little - can wear 5-6 clothes, but developmentally super strong physically and very smart - despite being a late august baby she's achieving above expectations. Her twin was 7lb13 when she was born and really no difference in them at all apart from size!

My son was born at 6lbs at 42 weeks. Has CMPA which he has mostly grown out of and reflux that stopped around 15months.
He didn't walk till he was 2 and is also speech delayed.
He is now 3.5. Wears 18-24m trousers and 2-3y tops.
However, he has grown so much in the last 5 months. He has gone from 2cm every 3 months to 1cm a month. He can run and attempt to jump. And since the beginning of lockdown his speech has gone from practically non existent to full sentences and lots (I mean lots) of Christmas songs.
I do sometimes worry about his height (along with his speech) but then I think that I was also small, and he has developed a lot since the beginning of the year. So I try not to worry.

My dd was tiny when born and still tiny now. She's the smallest in her class. She's now 11. She hardly eats anything and is under pediatrician and dietitian. She borderline for genetic testing depends how much she's grown at the next appointment. She's on the waiting list for autism. She is fine physically strong but wee.

All 3 of mine were 1st to 2nd percentile. The oldest pocket rocket is now a strapping 5ft 8 .

My DDs ended up wearing slippers for walking in as the shoe shops didn't do walking shoes in their dinky sizes. Yes they are smaller than a lot of their other school friends, but it has made no real difference to them, they do get slightly irked at people thinking they are younger than they are, but that is a future blessing.

DS was 5lb 11 at birth, on the 2nd percentile. He's just turned 3, now in aged 4-5 clothes and is taller than all his friends the same age. They all develop at different rates. It may just be that she's petite

I think it would be a good idea to do the blood testing just in case, you have nothing to lose and they’ve offered it.

My son got seriously ill and was being measured weekly. I had known he was small but when I saw the hospital charts measuring him as 1st centile I asked if something might be going on. They did some tests and he unexpectedly tested positive for coeliac disease - we’d had no clue.

@Debradoyourecall How old was your son when diagnosed? Do you mean he had no symptoms other than his growth?
