Winter essentials for first baby!

Hi All

I have a 9 month old and I’m struggling to figure out whether I need a few things to see him through winter. I’m also looking for recommendations on hats and mittens that stay on!

I’ve got a sheepskin footmuff for his pram but it only goes up to his chest and he is forever sticking his arms and hands out, would you recommend some kind of snowsuit or fleece all in one? If so, which ones are good?

Also - hats! I’ve tried various but beanies fall down and the ones with the ears that tie under the chin tend to blind him in on eye wherever he turns to look at something Confused Again, any recommendations for hats that worked for you would be appreciated. Mittens too!

Snowsuit- much easier than all the additional
Hats and gloves that fall off etc

Snowsuit with attached mittens was a definite for mine.

Thank you! Would you just stick a vest on underneath it?

Another vote for snowsuit with hood and attached mittens. I put it over whatever she was wearing in the house, vest+babygrow when she was smaller, vest+top+leggings when a bit older. If she had a cardi on, I might take that off depending how cold it was outside.

We had a few different ones and they were all fine. The only real preference I had was for two zips down the front rather than one to one side – easier to get on/off and meant I could unzip and fold down the front to keep her from overheating if we went in a warm shop, on the train, etc.

Just over whatever outfit they have on- no need for a blanket on top etc if in the buggy etc

My kids lived in these in the winter as babies and toddlers. Mind you, we were lucky enough to live not to far away from the Jojo outlet shop!

Normal clothes underneath and the sleeves fold over to keep hands warm or you can buy matching gloves.
They're made from recycled materials too. Super cosy.

No to snowsuit. What you want is a star fleece from tuppence and crumble. It's got fold back hands and comes in sizes 0 to 4 month, 4 month to 10 months and then the biggest size which would see your little one way into next yet. Theres a good and the feet are enclosed. It's also safe to be worn in a carseat so no taking stupid snow suits on and off putting him in and out. You just loser under if it's super cold, but if you already have a cosy footmuff I'll doubt you'll ever need more than a cardigan under there. Saves fading around with hats falling down and mittens falling off too!! X

Layer and faffing. Sometimes I hate autocorrect 🙈 xx

I never bothered with a snow suit. I live in the south of UK and it hardly ever snows down here anyway

You're not supposed to put them in a car seat in one. So you have to faff about taking it off and putting on again

Just get a warm coat and hat that ties on. Foot muff on pram plus blanket if you need it. Never put gloves on my child before. She wouldn't allow it 🤣

Another vote for the tuppence and crumble star wrap. Had them for my oldest and just ordered the bigger size for my baby, like PP said safe for in the car seat, I use it in the sling/carrier and for an extra layer in the pram. Plus they look super cute, wash easily and there’s no fighting them in and out of snow suit!

I absolutely hated snow suits. They are such a faff to put on, especially with a wriggly baby. I used to avoid going out because it was too much hassle. I also had a fleece star wrap and it was brilliant.

Those star wraps look brilliant. Agree that putting a wriggly baby in a snow suit is not anyone's idea of fun.

Thanks all. The star fleece does look like a good option! We have a Kaiser sheepskin footmuff for him so I do worry he’d maybe overheat in a snowsuit in that even outside

Star fleece is just a blanket. Don't feel like you have to buy these things. A 9 month old baby will be fine in a normal coat

Snowsuit then layer underneath as needed, buy a size up generally to allow for layers. Assuming you are in the uk, temperatures vary dramatically in the winter and towards the end your dc is likely to want to be walking so ensure the foot part unbuttons, attached mittens are a good feature.

Ps we did regularly do snow sports as not U.K. dd loved cross country skiing in the back carrier!

I just used the footmuff and a good coat. He has only just started leaving his hats on at the age of 2, so he used to get by with using his Hood. Gloves are still a no go, he just has to live with cold hands.

I never got the point of snowsuits, they look like far too much hassle. Layers are the way forwards!

This. Snowsuits are a pointless faff for non-walking babies. The star wrap is great for in a sling too. Can't use a snowsuit in a sling.
