6 month baby girl - what should I dress her in?

I know this sounds silly, but DD was a spring/summer baby and now the weather's getting colder, I don't have a clue how to dress her.

Would a long-sleeved plain sleepsuit with trousers and a jumper or cardigan on top work? The reasoning with the sleepsuit is that she won't have to wear socks as the feet are built in - I know babies tend to lose socks really easily. Also if her jumper rides up then her tummy is still covered underneath.

I've tried her in leggings but they seem to slip down and pull the nappy with them - what am I doing wrong?

I'd then add a padded winter jacket plus a woolly hat for when we go out.

At night I'm thinking just a sleepsuit plus a short-sleeved vest underneath.

Any other suggestions?

I dress my boys (5.5 months and 11 months, I foster hence the close age) in a short sleeved/sleeveless body suit, leggings or trousers and a long sleeved top. Do you use a body suit during the day? I find they keep the nappy in place. I also use tights under trousers when the weather is cold, even for the boys as they stay on unlike socks.

Short sleeve vest, long sleeve sleep suit/comfortable top and leggings in the house then with a cardigan/jacket/cot over if going out.

Thanks! No I haven't been using a vest under her clothes - but if it keeps the nappy in place I will give it a try. Perhaps that is where I've been going wrong with the leggings!

I had spring babies and in Autumn I used to dress them in a short sleeved/sleeveless poppered vest with leggings/joggers and a long sleeved t shirt and socks, then put jumper and coat on for going out. If it was really cold then I used to put tights on under the trousers. With socks, if you fold over the tops a couple of times it helps them stay on. They might still pull them off but if you have a footmuff/cover on your pram she should be fine.

Mines wore a vest nearly every day up to 3! (And still does most days).

Long sleeved in winter, short sleeve in spring and autumn and sleeveless in summer.

I loved sock-ons and socks when they were in leggings. Kept the socks on perfectly.

Leggings and long sleeve tops are perfect just now; Add a cardigan and coat/snowsuit as it gets colder/you spend more time outside.

I used to out my dd in a pair of tights with a long sleeved buddy suit poppered over the top. Great for indoors, warm enough.

Then if we went out I'd put a dungarees dress or similar over the top.

Peppered vest under everything.

Then pretty jersey trousers and matching top or tights and soft pinafore. Or soft cords and top. Add a cardigan if you need.

I think a sleep suit under clothes would be very uncomfortable for baby. My baby was born in March so had a few chilly weeks before it warmed up. She wears vests under everything now. If it is slightly warmer then I use a short sleeved vest and then a long sleeved top over that. If it is colder then I use a long sleeve vest and then a jumper/cardigan. Socks are not really a problem. They do wiggle them off occasionally but not a lot.
I have several pram suits that she wears outside but I need to get her a little padded coat too.

Both mine were in a vest and sleepsuit/baby grow with feet until they reached the walking stage when I swapped to t-shirts and trousers. Especially in the colder weather I don't want to have clothes riding up or shifting about or falling off (as with socks). You can get some really jazzy/colourful onesies so they can be just as cute as a little outfit. When it's chillier I popped socks under the sleepsuit and a cardigan over the top.

I used to dress mine in a short sleeve vest, long sleeve top, tights and leggings over the top.

Socks were pulled off, but she couldn’t get tights off with the leggings on top.

A short sleeve popper vest will hold the nappy in place. I always went with popper vest, comfy leggings or little cotton jogger type trousers, t shirt and cardigan/soft jacket.

Layers are always good as you can add or take away according to the heat. You also want comfort and easy access to change nappies.

Sleepsuit under clothes sounds like a nightmare situation if you get a poo explosion!

Short sleeve vest, baby grow, cardi/thin jacket or short sleeve vest, top & trousers/leggings, cardi/thin jacket or short sleeve vest, tights & dress, cardi/thin jacket. Mine always had blanket, pram suit or foot muff to go over/in for outside trips too. Socks I found were easiest just to hoik up over the bottom of trousers or leggings, not the most fashionable of looks but used to keep them on at least!

Same as most people here, I go for short sleeve vest, long sleeved bodysuit and leggings, and usually a light cardigan too as our flat is quite chilly. Cardigans are a fave here as they can easily be added if the temperature changes, and no fighting to get them over my little ones big noggin!

A sleepsuit under other clothes would be a pain for changing nappies. Leggings and snapper bodysuits are ideal. And tbh I just live with the fact that I have to put socks back in the baby 76 times a day!

What are your thoughts on dresses? Are they okay for when baby starts trying to crawl or do they get in the way? DD does attempt to bring her knees up when doing tummy time and I don't want her to be constricted by wearing a dress!

Get yourself some sock ons, they are fantastic for keeping socks on feet! And to be honest, you are def overthinking it. My DD regularly has no socks on (in the house) as I mostly cannot be bothered to continually put them back on! It’s not cold in our house so she’s fine! I don’t wear socks much either to be honest.

I’d say for winter with an older baby, have vests (long or short) and then leggings & a jumper/long sleeve top/cardigan. Or vest, dress & tights. Or vest, top & dungarees. Or sometimes, if I like a patterned vest I’ve got, I double vest! A plain short sleeve underneath & the patterned vest on top. & leggings.

Outdoors, a warm coat or pram suit if it’s freezing - not in the car though, no padded coats or pramsuits in the car. It affects the safety of the straps & thus car seat. I have a car fleece! Just your bog standard fleece that I pop on for car journeys along with blankets!

I had my baby in march and I dress mine in leggings and a vest. Then I can add layers over the vest when I need too. I also put socks on my baby and dont have an issue with them staying on. I can see that changing when crawling starts though....I think I just wont bother with them

@nonstop80 - what has your baby been wearing so far?! Just sleepsuits? Not that there’s anything wrong with sleepsuits just most people I know are well onto leggings & tops/jumpers/cardigans/dresses/dungarees by this point!

Dresses are fine. Plenty of people have crawling babies in dresses. I don’t personally love dresses on my not yet sat up babies. I find they ride up a lot and don’t hang well. Once a baby is sat up, a dress sits as it’s designed to do. Even better when they are up walking!

My daughter is 7 months and she wears a short sleeve vest plus leggings and a top and cardigan, or a vest with dress and tights. When wearing leggings I really recommend 'sock ons', no lost socks and stay in place perfectly.

Dresses are rubbish until they can walk - they really get in the way when crawling.

Mine wore a vest and leggings plus long sleeve top and cardigan/jumper and a woolly pram suit type thing when we went out.

I’ve just sorted through all my baby clothes for number 2 and ds wore short sleeve vest to hold nappy on and a baby grow. Didn’t bother with trousers and tops until he was walking at 10 months. I kept him in vests with poppers until he was nearly 3

Depends how cold it is outside. Generally at the mo my 7 month old will wear a short sleeve vest, a thick jumper, leggings, socks, booties, bonnet to cover ears & either a jacket or a blanket on him in his pram.

At home he’s usually in a short sleeve vest & sleepsuit.

To bed I’ve still got him in his 1 tog sleep bag with a short sleeve vest & sleepsuit underneath. Do you use sleep bags at night? They come with guides that tell you what to dress baby in for sleep depending on room temperature. Well, Grobag & Ergopouch do!
