(3 Posts)I’ve been advised by my MH team to stop breastfeeding and switch to formula - how do I do this? Sounds stupid but I have no idea how to avoid mastitis and the like, and successfully switch - how do I phase it out? Every day or every week drop a feed? Which one? I also don’t know how I should structure the day now - should I continue to feed on demand or every few hours on a schedule? It’s very confusing with little to no hands on help at the mo so I wondered if others could offer their experiences and their routines. DD is 13 weeks.
Is this a decision you’re happy with?
So that you don’t get too engorged i’d drop one feed at a time and wait a few days for your body to adjust before dropping the next one. It doesn’t really matter which you drop first but when you come to drop the next one I’d do it in intervals so one bottle, one breastfeed then a bottle rather than dropping two feeds in a row. Most formula fed babies can go 3 hours between feeds but you may have to build up to that as your baby may take less in a bottle at first while they get used to it.
Just to help when I started moving to formula feeding I did the 10.30 feed with formula first, next the mid morning lunch time one then the wake up one and then the mid afternoon one and so on. I can’t remember exactly why I did it that way but by spacing out the feeds I stopped it meant I didn’t get engorged
