Breastfeeding mum with a 6m 3w old, I really want 1 alcoholic drink. Is it safe?

My 6month 3 week old girl has been EBF since birth and 1 week ago she started eating solids twice a day.

I haven't had a drink for nearly 2 years, Its such a nice day and I just wanna sit back and have 1 beer. I'm just scared about the effects itll have on my little girl when she drinks my milk. Should I just give up the idea and put it away

Have a drink.

As long as you're sober enough to look after the baby you'll be fine. I've been feeding DS2 26 months and all I can say is thank goodness for wine!

Your milk can only ever get as alcoholic as your blood, so to do any harm to your baby you’d have to drink enough to give yourself severe alcohol poisoning, one beer in the sun will be fine!

My nana drank a pint of Guinness every day while breastfeeding. One drink isn't harmful.

Gosh yes do it. It’s been a few years since I breastfed but I often used to have a little glass of wine. I remember reading something along the lines of you’d have to be several times over the drink drive limit before any alcohol passed through to your breast milk.

Yes, of course it is. I was at the pub from when mine was 6 weeks old enjoying lovely long lunches and a couple glasses of wine. As someone said, breastmilk can only be as alcoholic as your blood. Even if you drank enough for it to be fatal, I've read your milk can only be as alcoholic as a glass of orange juice (which contains naturally small amounts of alcohol due to fermentation). I wouldn't give a 6 month orange juice, but because it's very acidic and sugary, not because of the alcohol content.

Yep, if you can safely hold your baby and feed them then it's fine. You would have to be absolutely sloshed for even a tiny bit to pass through.

There's nothing to suggest that you should only have two units. As ling as you're sober enough to look after baby as pp said it's fine. Which would also be the case if you were formula feeding too of course.

I would have not lasted a collective 4 year breastfeeding if I couldn't drink

Have a drink or two. The level of alcohol that crosses into the milk is minute, way lower than even crosses into blood.

I researched it as was due to have an op with my son and the anaesthetist looked into it too to see if I could nurse after surgery due to the drugs I was going to be given.

Best time to drink is while you nurse as longest time until you next feed if you are worried.

As long as your sober enough to hold the baby it’s fine. No matter how much you drink your breast milk won’t have any more alcohol in it than naturally occurs in orange juice.

Enjoy your drink! Its absolutely fine, my midwife and health visitor said for it to affect your baby you would have to be absolutely paralytic. I often had a glass or 2 of wine while I was breastfeeding
