Start using Mumsnet PremiumDS 6 years old with cough
(2 Posts)Hello all,
I hope everyone is well and safe.
My DS who's 6 years old has had a cough for around 6 weeks now which started around the the time of lockdown. We were naturally very worried. However, he's not had a fever whatsoever. Around the 2nd week of his cough, he would wake up coughing from sleep. On one occasion there was some wheezing. He was coughing up yellow phlegm. We called 111 who presrcribed an inhaler and antibiotics.
I wasn't really keen on giving the antibiotics but we didn't want any infection getting worse. The cough has is now slightly less but it's still there. It's a particularly bad in the mornings. We have also been advised to give him preteze in the morning and before bed but it's not really making a difference. There is no longer yellow phlegm when he coughs but there is yellow snot in the mornings.
He is otherwise eating and drinking normally.
Could this just be allergy related?
is it quite normal for coughs to last this long in a child?
I'd follow up with your doctor to be on the safe side.
Could be hayfever? Snotty nose and a scratchy throat are consistent. Does he have itchy/red eyes?
Could give him some Piriton for a few days and see if that makes any difference.
But do ask your doctor because I am not medically qualified!!
