Start using Mumsnet PremiumCord falling off - is this normal?
(6 Posts)DS’s cord came away yesterday (hurrah!) but there’s still a bit of it within his belly button. The bit that’s remaining is flat and not sticking out at all. Is this normal and is there anything I should do?
Sounds perfectly normal. Just keep the stump clean and dry.
Thanks. How long does it usually take for the rest to come out, so his belly button is totally cord free?
Usually, the rest doesn’t come out or fall off. I’m assuming you didn’t tug or cut here, it’s just naturally come away right? What happens is it will usually shrink inwards and then be absorbed into the belly button. Skin grows over it. If you touch your own belly button you will feel a little hard nub inside it. That’s where your cord was and what is left of your stump.
Totally normal. Just carry on keeping it clean and dry.

Yes, the bit that was sticking out just came away naturally. I had no idea the rest shrank inwards - thanks for that!
