Is this a terrible idea? Any advice or words of warning?

Why would it be terrible? As long as you get a barber that’s understanding and doesn’t expect them to sit perfect for a full on restyle it’ll be fine. Probably better to start them when it only needs a trim vs a mop taken off.

Sorry I meant cut it yourself. He's been to the hairdressers before but I just thought maybe I could save the hassle and do it myself with some clippers and scissors... 😬

I think the op means cutting it herself at home, unless I've took that wrong?

I do - I bought clippers. I go all over the sides and back with the longest guard on (think it's an 8) and then just tidy up the top with scissors and a comb/whatever I can grab. Oh, and tidy up the bits over his ears with scissors.

It's not a super tidy hairstyle but it's neat enough for a boisterous 2 year old, and it looks fine.

I do it with electric clippers on a 12, super easy

I tried it once and it was a totally disaster. I found that day that it's easier to get an emergency hairdresser appointment than an emergency GP appointment

I do it regularly. I started because DS1 was absolutely terrified of the hairdresser's! It was worse than taking him for a jab.

I recommend starting when they're as little as possible, because they will look a bit messy the first couple of times before you get the hang of it. I watched a few YouTube tutorials and bought a decent pair of scissors (£20!).
I have enough practice now and his hair looks very neat. I definitely recommend doing it because it saves you loads of time and money in the long run.

No as I am not a barber. He would look awful if I did it.

my daughter is 6 and has never been to a hairdresser, i always cut it. Like a PP, she was terrified of the hairdresser when small so it was needs must.

to be fair she straight long hair so it is super easy to cut a straight line across :)

I cut my 2 year old's hair. He wouldn't sit still for a barber. He has a mop of wavy hair so it's generally okay if I don't do a great job of it , I tend to pop him in his high chair , distract him with cbeebies and work quickly.

Our son has never had his hair cut by me or anyone. He has the most amazing afro, his hair is halfway down his back when stretched.

I don't trust myself to do it justice, but I also don't trust anyone else as he gets very fussy about anyone touching his hair. I will have to get it done before he starts school this year. That's our deadline.

I tried once, but he started screaming that I was going to stab his eyes out and ended up with half a fringe. I never tried again after that.

I work with young kids and it's pretty easy to spot those with home done haircuts. I suspect the kids don't care. Maybe they'll have a good laugh looking back at their baby photos. I work with one little girl who has a blunt cut fringe and mullet. It just looks terrible. Poor thing.

My DH cuts our DS hair he's almost 3 years old he hates going to hairdressers and hates clippers it's a noise thing so we have recently resorted to using the clippers on him at home instead it makes its slightly easier in that if he's kicking off etc we don't have to worry about anyone else getting annoyed or the poor hairdresser trying to cut it as best as she/he can when our DS gets distressed.

I cut my son and husband's hair (I am not a hairdresser but do a decent job, it's really not difficult to do a graded back and longer top)

I would use clippers without a guard across a comb for doing the fringe if he has one.

Go on the theory of its only hair, it grows and in guessing he doesn't have a peer group that would even notice at his age xxx

I would advise clippers if you aren't experienced as it means you can't hurt him.

I'd start with the biggest guard on and work from there. (depends on head shape for style you can get away with, my son looks ridiculous with short top so I use scissors on that)

Yes, lots of good YouTube tutorials out there. Mine are nearly five and nearly two and I've always done it. Sit them in front of the TV in the high chair with some popcorn and away you go. The hardest bit is over the ear on the 'wrong' side. That and keeping their fingers out of the way. The wetter the hair, without it actually dripping, the less itchy and wriggly they get.

I wouldn't dare do it myself 😄 my hair dresser does it for a fiver with hairdressing scissors and does it very well Grin she's worth every penny.

I used to.
DS spent his pre-school years with a shaggy bowl cut.

The one time I took him to a hairdresser they wanted to cut it all short.

We used to but it looked bloody awful.

I do my husbands and now 5 year old, two hair dressers cut his ears (ds) in the past so he is naturally quite afraid of them.

I am getting better, short back and sides, scissors on top to take off length and blend.

I did.. It didn't look that great lol it was a bit bowl cut vibe and uneven. I got his Nan to neaten it up and looks a lot better ngl

I do it myself as he screamed the place down at the barbers and had to be done with me holding him.

Got some proper hairdressing scissors. Tend not to use the clippers on him as it tickles and he moves

We stick him on his booster seat on the bar stool, mat on floor under, duggee on the tablet and we're all good

Yeah, used to wait til he was asleep when he was tiny but he’s two now and will sit for it. Do it with hairdressing scissors, it looks fine. People are surprised when I say I do it.

Yes, he always hated having his haircut - the fight was less embarrassing in the privacy of our own home, so we bought some clippers.
