Food for Comfort

BBC

Does anyone out there love comfort food? Is it chocolate, mashed potato or buttered toast that you go for - or something completely different?

The Nation's Favourite Food is a new series for BBC 2 - a celebration of everything that's great about food. It's not a cookery show (and it's nothing to do with being a great cook!) - we will be meeting people from all over Britain who are passionate about food.

In our Food for Comfort programme we will be exploring the link between food and emotion and the importance of food in our lives - we hope to include parents of small children and people going through pregnancy, birth and breastfeeding. If food is important to you then we would like to hear from you.

Please give Emma a call, in confidence, on 020 8752 6179 or email [email protected]

When I was pregnant i wanted lots of white toast with butter. I never normally eat white bread but couldn't get enough of it.

I went off chocolate during all 3 pregnancies and I was rather an addict beforehand. I really craved citrus fruits though particularly apricots and satsumas. I could easily drink 1 litre of fresh orange juice in one go. They say that you crave the things that your body needs but I can't say I craved anything high in iron and always ended up with some ghastly tablets.

I don't mind being used as a statistic but wouldn't want to be named or appear on a tv programme.

I was quite into milk with DS1 and had loads of milk shakes but wasn't too heavily into fruit. DS2 and DD saw a liking for apricots but I was much worse for fruit with DD. Chocolate never tasted bad with any of them but I just had no desire to eat it. I never had any really weird cravings like coal of soil and ice cream was never on the agenda either. So much for the findings on Mumsnet homepage.

Before I fell pregnant I used to love eating lots of salad, olives, vegetables, etc., but I found as soon as I started morning sickness at around 6 weeks my taste buds reverted back to childhood. Dh would ask what I would like for tea, and it would be hotdogs, or chicken nuggets, beans and chips! I found my love for 'grown up' food again around week 15, and really couldn't eat hotdogs! Bizarre hey.

oh nics1stbaby, me too. I had to get all my relatives to bring over crates of Shreddies and Vimto. Didn't revert though - I still eat/drink them a lot even though dd is now 3mths

My absolute fave comfort food when not pregnant is spaghetti with olive oil, garlic and chili and lots of crunchy sea salt. YUM.

Pregancy really influenced my diet too - much more than I could have ever imagined. I went from someone who has no food dislikes and a huge chocolate habit to someone who hated the smells of most spices, garlic etc...

When pregnant my big big comfort food was anything with pork in it - this was to my utmost surprise as had never been a huge fan. Suddenly all I wanted was bacon sandwiches, sausage rolls and pork roast. I once drove myself 10 miles to the nearest 24 hour Tesco in the dead of night to buy a 100 pack of frozen party sausage rolls. By the time I got home I was so tired and sorry for myself that I dragged dh out of bed to sit up and share the cooking and eating with me....hmmm, not very popular the next day but at the time dh knew better than to question my sanity...

Sausage rolls have remained the ultimate in comfort food for me and my problem with certain food spicy smells have remained even though my dd is now over a year old.
