My 11 year old doesn't know how to tie his shoes laces

Ok I know that sound dreadful. He is very bright but has ADHD. He is actually in the gifted section for maths and plays his hobby at international level but he can't tie his shoe laces! Yes I'm to blame he refused to learn and relied on me buying Velcro straps, but now he knows he has to learn. I have tried to teach him but he just doesn't seem to get it! Then I get confused. I watch you tube videos of different methods. I have no family and no one else is involved with my son to take things from another angle. Any advice? I don't think this bunny ear method is any use. He can barely tie a knot. I have tried and tried.

Neither does mine. And he’s not got a diagnosis, neither is he gifted at maths.
I just got fed up with his frustration so stopped teaching him.

My 10 year old isnt particularly gifted and can only tie his laces badly. He just cant knot them properly so they come loose within minutes. I cant get worked up about it tbh, he's good at other stuff.

I dont know very much about ADHD but my DD was reluctant to learn - she was frustrated by it and I was impatient.

I didnt think "bunny ears" was easy. The other way was and has always easier for me.

My 13 year old refuses point blank to try to learn.
Reckons Velcro exists for a reason.

My 9 year old learnt within 10 mins of wearing laced shoes.

My 12 yo DD has just learned the bunny ear method, she can't double knot it so they come undone very quickly. She also can't do her cuffs or tie and struggles with buttons.

I don't blame myself. I tried and tried to teach her without success. So you probably won't have succeeded even by pushing it, repeatedly.

She's so clever, it just seems so illogical. She's awaiting results of ASC assessment.

My mum is 64 and never has learned to tie shoe laces!! And she knits sews made her own wedding dress! Unbelievable really, she just avoids laces in all shoes!

My DD is 11 and has ASD and dyspraxia.

Technically she can tie laces using the bunny ear method.

However.... it takes her so long to tie them, and they come undone almost immediately, so she has given up.

Mine is 8, also ADHD, also like yours good at maths, gifted piano player. We tried and tried, the frustration was too much at times. He finally got it and was over the moon. One thing that really helped was to face the same direction, so he sat in front of me, rather than opposite me, if that makes sense.

Oh and we got some really large rounded laces, much easier to make out what was going on.

You say you watch you tube videos, but have you let him watch the videos? One of the 9yos I help in school learnt to do it by watching the videos. He couldn’t manage with anyone trying to teach him, but learning himself through videos was perfect for him.

Use two different coloured laces - it really helps

Mine learnt at 17. He still gets trainers that tie with velcro.

I don't think you are to blame at all. My dd is 10 and just learning (she is asd), she just couldn't get it before her OT showed her. Other things she gets in the flick of a switch.

Older dd had it by the time she was 4.

O.T here. You can get elastic laces which may mean more shoe options. Echo different colour for the different ends whilst learning and start with with large round ones if poss. Repetition over and over , very dull. Bunny ears is easier to learn but less secure result. Perhaps use Strawberry laces for a bit of fun ( may not tie very tight though) and eat success if sugar allowed......!

DS2 has ASD, dyslexia. Elasticated laces and lace locks take the pressure off - ie getting changed for PE. DC can then practice tying laces around thigh whilst sitting down and relaxed with no pressure.

My child can’t tie her shoelaces I have no idea why she was taught multiple times I don’t know what else what to do :(
