Baby led weaning ideas?!

Hi,

I have been weaning my almost 7 month old for a few weeks now. I have been giving him some mushed up food that I’ve done myself and then tried baby led weaning as ive heard such good things.

However I need some inspiration for food ideas, he doesn’t have any teeth yet so I worry some stuff he won’t be able to swallow properly.

What did you give for lunch/tea? Can I give pasta etc when he doesn’t have teeth? I haven’t a clue, ftm and I’m already scared to death of him choking!!!

My little girl loves steamed broccoli, baked courgettes, cheese sticks, bananas.. baked parsnip was a hit. Steamed carrot sticks were good too, just make sure they are soft. She really liked strips of chicken and cod but I'd try that when your little one can cope with the very soft fruit/veg first.

My DD had pasta before she had teeth, but plain as slippery sauce made it difficult to grab. She devoured it Smile

My DD will be 7 months next week, and we're still at the start of our weaning journey, but these are a few of the finger foods she's tried.

. Cucumber and carrot batons
. Broccoli and Cauliflower
. Pitta bread and bread and butter
. Cheese
. Scrambled eggs
. Cheese triangles (went everywhere 😂)
. Strawberries (like a blood bath 🧛‍♀️)
. Banana
. Rice cakes
. Biscotti

She mostly prefers just playing with finger food, rather than actually eat it. So I do substitute it with purée's and she's still on mostly milk (4-5 bottles a day).

I can't even remember, although we had to go back to purees as he held food and sucked that thumb, when we started again he just ate what I ate, cut into nice chunky pieces to hold. The same as we eat now actually. Pulled pork burritos, Indian, Chinese, Italian, British.

Scrambled eggs and baked beans are quick and easy. Also, sandwiches cut up into small pieces. Tuna mayo and egg mayo are easy to eat. Also, try soft cheese or peanut butter on rice cakes or oatcakes. Lots of babies like to eat grated cheese.

Offer what you are having minus the salt. Fish pie and spaghetti Bolognese are also popular with many babies.

In my experience, weaning really takes off at nine months. Before that, its just little tastes and lots of playing.

Most babies don't choke. They may cough a bit if the food is going the wrong way, but that sorts the problem out.

If you are very anxious, a pediatric first aid course might make you feel more confident.
