Weird non pooping / built up bum wind

My DS is almost 5 months old, he has cut his first tooth and the one next to it is currently on its way. This past week he has been an absolute nightmare to get to sleep - or rather lay down in his cot - he will fall asleep in our arms no problem but then writhe and wriggle himself awake again when laid down. We'd put this down to teething and have been giving him baby ibuprofen which does seem to help him stay asleep but its taken 2-3 hours of rocking and attempting to put him down each night! me and DH are on our knees.

Then last night when DS was writhing and wriggling and I picked him out of his cot for the 100th time I thought I'd check his temperature - literally 1 million huge airy farts came out plus a big chunk of poo and some pooey water! his temp was normal. After that, he went down quite easily. Tonight again - the writhing and wriggling, so I did the same thing and got exactly the same results.

Whats going on, is this teething upset tummy, constipation, wind? Should I take him to the doctor? Surely me expelling all his wind and poop for him every night isn't right! He hasn't had a bowel movement on his own for 2-3 days either.

DS is formula fed and we have recently tried to get him to take normal SMA formula rather than anti reflux but he wasn't taking it well so we switched back after 2 days, maybe that is part of it?

Has anyone discussed the possibility of Cow’s Milk Protein Allergy with you at all OP?

@JiltedJohnsJulie I have read about CMPA but tbh he doesn't have many of the symtoms and has always been fairly happy on his milk up until now. What do you think?

It sounds like normal teething symptoms to me. Mine always had really foul watery nappies and wind and disrupted sleep when teething. I would give it a bit more time and see if it settles after that tooth pops though.

Can you swap ibuprofen for calpol? The former can play up their lite tummies so we always do calpol first stop then ibuprofen if really needed

@SleepingStandingUp I'll give it a go, he doesn't like the taste of calpol and tends to spit it out, which is mainly why we switched.

He still hasn't pooped :(

Oh god, this was me. DS1 had terrible tummy issues when he was tiny. Once after a very long time without poo the doctor taught me the thermometer trick.

Posted too soon! It was like a bloody tsunami. Infinitely happier baby afterwards. Gas pains are awful for them and they don’t have the muscles to deal with it.

Have you been doing tummy massage, bicycling legs, etc?

@JassyRadlett Yes! all the tummy massages from my baby massage book, bicycle legs, lots of movement. Tried a warm bath with flannels on his tummy, cold boiled water (he had 3oz of that yesterday) and still nothing! I get a little bit if I do the thermometer trick but I want him to do it himself. Trying lactolose today and if still nothing I think docs tomorrow. He seems fine in himself, perfectly happy.
